Game maker studio has all the functionality Pro 8 had, but for free. You only need to pay if you want to compile to an APK or iOS app etc.
Also, if you do most of the heavy lifting in GML (the C-based language it provides) the end executables aren't slow.
When you did have to pay for DirectX and realtime image manipulation etc. it was only about £10, which isn't that much, considering it's so easy to learn when you're eight and don't know any real languages and don't have anyone to teach you.
Of course, I wouldn't use it for anything serious, but if I wanted to knock something up quickly, and couldn't be bothered actually writing the game engine I was going to be using, then it'd be my first port of call.
I use GM Studio. Get that version instead. It can compile to native code with the YYC. Don't get me wrong, you're still better off writing it in C++ if you need speed but for most games GM Studio should be sufficient.
It's Turing complete, and offers a hell of a lot of shortcuts. Technically, if you were that stupid and clever, you could write a Wii emulator in there, and you might only need to overclock a 4670K to 90 GHz to get fullspeed with HLE and 1x native IR.
I remember a few years pack there were 2 people to post Chip-8 emulators made in GM(One in 5 and the other in 6).
No clue what 5 and 6 means.
Also, I'm releasing 2048, like right now.
Zip file attached. Only 2048.8xp needed (internal name Z048). "2048 Source" (A2048) is source code. "2048 Graphics" (SDF) must be run to generate a graphical data file necessary to compile A2048. "2048 Graphics Source" (ASDF) is the source code for the graphical data and how I transfer data to the calculator. (Transfer a hex program, copy-paste it into a loader program that dehexlifies it and writes it to an appvar, which is compiled into the Z048).
To recompile, install Axe Parser, run SDF then compile A2048.
To modify graphics, modify ASDF, compile to SDF, run SDF, then compile A2048.
Oh man the world is coming to an end, I said some mean nasty no no words on an internet forum. I think baby gonna cry, y'all think baby may cry?

Game Maker 5 and Game Maker 6.
1. My hard drive was taken away by a bunch of assholes as an extortion maneuver. I took an old laptop SATA drive, bolted it into my computer using screws and washers, reinstalled Windows, and went on.
2. The assholes proceeded to threaten to steal my entire computer. I start using my laptop more.
3. I need to transfer a file from the repurposed laptop drive into my working laptop. I take out the laptop drive from my OC'd PC, temporarily put the screws and washers in the hard drive mounting area of the case, put the laptop drive into an external case, transfer the file, and put together the computer. CLANK. I forgot to take the screws and washers out of the holes in the case. There are two screws and two washers.
4. I take off the back panel, find a screw, then turn the case upside-down, shake the case, and hear two clanks. Looking for the fallen objects, I find a second screw nearby and two washers further away, not knowing if either of them was the second object I think I heard falling on the ground. I then find a washer in the case. Grand total, two screws, one confirmed washer, and I think I heard a second one, but I don't know if it fell out or not.
5. I look around on the ground and see like two washers on the ground. When I first mounted my hard drive, I dumped my bag of leftover parts from initial assembly onto my desk and found working screws. The washers must've fell onto the ground some time ago. What I don't know is if either of the washers is the one in the case.
6. I remove my GPU, DVD burner, and motherboard, leaving the front panel connections there. I don't find a washer.
7. I remember that my water cooler came with 8 washers. I look around my desk, gather together all the washers I can find, and only 5 are accounted for. I don't know how many I lost earlier.
8. I type out this message, afraid to plug my computer back in from fear that it will be engulfed by a fireball as soon as I plug it in or turn it on.
My choices are to (1) either take a chance and put my computer back together, or to (2) completely disassemble it, look for the manuals, reassemble it, and hope the washer isn't shorting out the PSU, GPU, etc. Or I could (3) buy some iron filings, dump it in, shake as much out as I can, sell the booby-trapped computer online, and wait for the police to come.
