I mean, I get that people are fond of Chrono Trigger, and they might not want to be disappointed by the vision some fans have of it, but that's no reason to say that vision should go unfulfilled. Let the people make stuff on the side, and if it's not your cup of tea, ignore it altogether. As a fan, it's no harm to me or you if we let such projects alone, however, I'd at least like to have seen a completed version to judge for myself. If it's bad, then okay... But if not, I want to play it. Unfortunately, it's far too late, and that particular DMCA takedown happened before torrents, MEGA, DropBox, etc, so we don't even have a playable demo, just a video. At any rate, Square managed to screw up the Steam port on their own, so I'm not worried about other fans disappointing me with their fan-projects; clueless companies are a bigger problem in gaming.
Personally though, I have no sacred cows in my barn. I have a lot of nostalgia for many games (Chrono Trigger included) but I don't see anything as ever being "untouchable" in that it can't be improved or eventually remade. I believe it's difficult to do without the proper mindset and approach from a developer, but not impossible. People really have to understand what made the game work (and sometimes fans understand this waaay more than the actual developers that get hired). Case in point is Sonic the Hedgehog, where Sonic Mania has a lot of roots in the Sonic fangaming community and managed to beat the pants off the last decade of what Sega themselves produced.

FTFY. That piece of trash
still earns my hate after all these years. An absolute betrayal to the Paper Mario sub-franchise.They kind of made it up to me with Paper Jam, but I'm going to be raw about that one for decades...

On the note of remakes, reboots, and re-releases, I wonder if Nintendo is keen on making more anthologies. They did that with a few Mario games and the Kirby games. Imagine all 7 previous Mario Kart games on the Switch, available as a single cart. They'd probably be too lazy to port any of the GBA or NDS multiplayer modes though. A Metroid (non-Prime) anthology would sell well too, and that's more doable, basically a bundle of Virtual Consoles. A Fire Emblem anthology could be a big hit too.
