I have never experienced that recently. One time it happened was when I uninstalled gnome metapackage to get rid of gnome-screensaver.
Use Xfce instead. Then you shouldn't have any more significant problems.
well I'm not using ubuntu or debian, I'm using crunchbang
I'd seriously rather not switch to xfce since I'm loving openbox and it has very few issues I have found thus far I can complain about, and it's not at all related to desktop environment
Yeah, pretty sure openbox doesn't break your system for not installing a screensaver.
Mixing different "branches" can cause problems.
I assume you didn't do that.
Did apt just freak out?
yeah, apt just freaked out
I fixed it by manually reinstalling all 562 packages wrongly marked as ready for removal so they'd be marked as manually-installed for the rest of time and APT hopefully won't do this again
I would recommend using a good desktop environment to help alleviate your problems. Basically anything other than openbox.
Fuck your Linux DE flamewars, I use Gnome 3 and I like it.
well the problem wasn't at all related the the desktop environment; apt freaked out and deleted everything, not openbox

Desktop environments? Pfft... I use the CLI and I like it
Pretty much never happened to me in Ubuntu. Like ever. Is Ubuntu Gnome going Wayland by the way? Or are they going Mir?

The CLI's fun to use, but you can't exactly play Gnome Mahjong in it. Even if half of what I do on my Arch installation is in zsh in a secondary VT, I'd still need at least a basic window manager to keep myself sane.
...Honestly, though, considering that I haven't booted into Arch in months, I should just shut up and get back to my two OS X installations where I manage the
shit out of all these windows.
