The developers stated that they added the outlines to the characters to make them easier to see.
They're likely trying to push for a higher framerate over visual fidelity or compensate for a possible 3D functionality.
The Wii U version does look pretty good. And it'll be in true 1080p to boot!

For some reason that makes me think of Steve Irwin.

Well the outlines are unappreciated. I can see things on the 3DS just fine. Small characters aren't a problem for my eyes (Samurai Chronicles for example) but sub-par models are (again, Samurai Chronicles). I know SSB games zoom in and out based on the stage and players' position, but I would think that the unique stages for the 3DS are designed with that in mind.
I would really just like to see them up the image quality. I
am sure hope they could have done that without affecting the framerate. Now I know the 3DS doesn't have the largest resolution out there, but some games look mighty snappy (Mario Tennis Open is pretty shiny). 3DS for me is a portable Wii (not really, but I can dream right?)
Also, screw 3D. It's useless :p
Not as good as Women Wrestling though...
New Half life announcement, or Portal, or even TF3....
They said it has nothing to do with a new valve game
But Gabe Newell can't count to three.
In other news, the computers at my college are capable of using Jhonn's portable version of dolphin to play Wind Waker at full speed. Some people are very impressed, some, including my maths teacher, asked how to 'get the ROMs' (all were informed of cleanrip and the homebrew channel, and it was implied to some that GC/Wii images are encrypted in such a way that torrenting them will almost always damage the image), and one guy said he wouldn't be impressed until he saw me do it on a mac, before calling me lazy when he found out that I hadn't single-handedly written Dolphin last night while I was at home.
So, basically I have something to do now in computing lessons when I'm told to write up coursework.
Finally, if you tell my calculator to find the sum of 2^-x between 0 and 100000000, it either takes 12-15 hours to work it out, or 12-15 hours to crash. I can tell in seconds that the answer is 2 to the precision the calculator can work at.
Fixed indexed rendering and started implementing lighting today:
Topologically speaking, that's even two spheres. Take this, NV!
Post-finally, in yet more news, I discovered I won't be able to transfer my OEM Windows 7 to my new motherboard, so I've decided to get another licence from Dreamspark.
As I'm already going to have to reinstall Windows for things to work, do I want an SSD? If so, which one (i.e. how big, who from etc)
Well that was an improbable time to be ninja'd

If you want one, and are willing to spend the money then go ahead and get one. They do speed up load times for games, and things of the sort. Personally I think they are overpriced considering that they don't have as much space for the money, and their life span isn't very good.
SSD life span (read online/from friends experience): 1-2 years
HDD life span (from personal experience): 5-7 years
I could get a normal hard drive that holds 1TB or 1.5TB or 2TB for $80-$120, while on the other hand I could get an SSD that holds 250GB for $140 and up. Overall the SSD is good on load times, but I don't think it is enough to justify having a shorter life span and less space.
