I just finished Paper Mario 64 and want to continue to play through the rest of this awesome series, so all day I've been trying to get this emulator to work. unfortunately, i cannot get it to run at full speed.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Dolphin 2.0 (tried several others before settling on this one)
Gateway 503GR
Windows XP SP2
Pentium 4 Processor
3.0 Ghz, 1 Gig RAM
Nvidia 8800GT Overclocked
Single Core (not sure on this, but i believe i bought it before Dual Cores were common, about 5-ish years ago)
-----------------------------------------------------------
my machines a bit old, but because of my graphics card and what not, i very rarely have trouble running high performance stuff, but Dolphin isn't running anywhere near an acceptable speed for me.

after spending all day, I've managed to get the title screen to run at between 80%-105% with like 55-65 FPS (originally it was like 50%, major increase). However, at the starting cut scene, i only get 30% speed, and at the part where you begin at the docks, its about 20%-28% speed. That is where i have stopped so far.

I've tampered with many different settings (i believe it runs a few % faster with dual core off, as i probably don't even have a dual core), using Direct3d9 at the moment with whatever the newest Direct X is (i think 11). I have also tried everything in the speed up thread, including Game Booster (which does nothing for me), and using the Batch File. i have heard some talk about Watchdog, but i think that is only on older versions of Dolphin, replaced by Framelimit i guess? (i use Framelimit at 60+ with Audio Throttle turned off)

Does anyone have any idea how i can make this all run faster, preferably at double what I'm using it at now? I know its not the ISO, cause I have tried Metroid too (and its way worse). I'm going to try Luigi's Manson next, as I heard that requires lower performance, to test if its just my machine.

Sorry for the wall of text, please give me some feedback.

you need a dual core at least, and iy you have the money to buy and the pryority is dolphin than, buy the best dual core you can or the best one for overclock. The dolphin need too much CPU power. If you are buying a CPU also for pc games, than a corei7 maybe will do the job, but never forget for dolphin , only 2 cores are need , for now, and they must be the better speedy you get or else games like Super Mario Galaxy will never run at full speed in HD. I have a dual core 2.8MHZ overcloccked at 3.2MHZ and itsn´t enought for SMG. That´s my opinion, or else just play on your WII Smile

i don't have a Wii or money at the moment, or I would just buy the system and be done with all this Confused. I've never needed a dual core before to run high end games before, i don't know why Dolphin requires it to run a console made like 10 years ago (way before i even bought my computer and upgraded it). I've managed to get Luigi's Mansion upto 100% Speed....but the FPS goes down to like 2, which is like limiting it to having 2% speed i guess.

Man, wake up Huh Wii has like 6 years, and yes gamecube has much more time but if you search you will find that not even ps2 is well emulated yet. It is need MUCH CPU power because it is an EMULATION, so you need to run Windows, and an console over that. Sorry you don´t understand this things and i can not explain here. it would take too much time. And don´t say you don´t have the console or the game or you will be baned by tha administrator. Thas´t Piracy dude.
Sorry but cannot help you, just buy the wii if you don´t now how to emulated or the means necessary for that.

never said i didn't have the games, my Gamecube broke years ago and i really don't want to buy another just to play the few games i haven't sold over the years, not to mention I'm broke at the moment. i understand software and what not, but i don't get how my computer is capable of like ps3 graphics, but isn't capable running much older animation, its just weird. technology is crazy sometimes, not to mention disappointing :S

sorry, i did understood you wrong, but look out because the administrators of the forum don´t like piracy Smile

About emulation , it is the simple fact i explain. Your pc is better for the games that were design for him...and worst for something (like a console) that it wasn´t design to run in a pc. So the programers have to make that possible but it will cost GFx and CPU power because it is a emulation. And if the console is stronger than the more hardware is need. And don´t forget that in the pc is allways better thant the console it selfs because of the graphic possibilities... but this is another talk.
Try upgrading your pc. And one more time, sorry for my miss understood

Its not a big deal.

Yeah I know a lot about computers, just surprised is all. Wonder if there is a Metroid or Paper Mario version for PC? that would be pretty nice. Luigi's Mansion is running decent enough (50%-ish), bringing back good memories. Maybe I can talk a friend into just letting me borrow their GC, if they still have it.
For those of us dealing w/invisible Punies, this may help: you need 11 Punies in the 11 Jabbi war, and 101 Punies in the 101 Jabbi war. As long as you use your hammer and NOT any winds, you should be okay. Using the winds makes the visible Punies (all two/three of them) disappear entirely. Just keep hammering in the places where the visible Punies are and you should be able to get through okay. You only have the 11 Punies for a little while, so be patient and grit your teeth. Once you get to 101 Punies, you'll be a big, long shadow and will be able to play fairly easier (albeit a bit slower). Good luck!
Very sorry if this's been covered, but I can't find any info on it Sad

This game runs fine on my rig, 60 FPS consistently, but every 10 seconds or slow it becomes laggy, slows to about 30-40 fps for a few seconds then goes back to normal Sad

Could this be the game trying to read/write copious amounts of data from (non-existent?) memory areas? Feel free to flame, as I know nothing about how the engine actually works :|

EDIT: When it slows down, the FPS slows down to exactly 30 FPS and the VPS sits at around 48-52 VPS. Sad
What does VPS actually stand for?
Hmm, switching from Direct Sound on the HLE to OAL seemed to help the problem Smile Now there's no sharp drops, just a general ~12 FPS drop down to 48-50 FPS while in large areas. Battles and smaller areas are fine, though Smile I'm using the NTSC (60Hz) version btw.

Does anyone have any idea what might be the problem here? :S
