Quote:Even if there were multiple slots, they would be downclocked because lynnfield only has one x16 on die. right, but better boards add lanes. for example ASUS P7P55 got full 2*x16 and 2*x8. dont get me wrong, i would rather buy a i5 750(more likely 860) then a 955, but thats because i would buy a good board with it and overclock to upper end. on stock, i dont see a reason for this cpu.

I could buy the i7 920 but I'd have to hand in the 4890 for a 4870 and it'll still be much more expensive. I guess I'll wait for a while and otherwise go with the AM3 socket. 09-09-2009, 09:19 PM

For multi gpu, I'd go with the full fledged bloomfield/x58 combo. 09-10-2009, 01:20 AM
didn't know this.
will this change with other chipset ? probably not if its the cpu only letting 16 lanes in. what a crap...

I'm about to decide to go with amd because intel is shoving its own fist up its ass right now

damn, and i was about to get one of those 32nm dualcores when they come out and clock it to heaven.
but only 16 lines maximum...its a pity i need a second full 2.0 x16 slot for my work. sandy bridge means another year with this stupid 3ghz c2d.

why do you need more than 16 lanes? Are you on this monster 8way ssd raid card setup with sli?

full 16 for fpga card + another 16 for gfx @ gpgpu mode
(+ another 16 if possible for gfx in gfx mode but thats difficult) even pci-e 2.0 x16 is too slow some times, so i really cant accept less here. Also i see another problem : with pci-e going directly in the cpu, it will be difficult to overclock it for higher bandwidth.
