Super Mario Galaxy 1 HD Texture Mod

@yoonie
It's entirely possible I missed a grass file in the conversion from png to dds. I will double check.
I have uploaded SMG2 HD Mod here: https://forums.dolphin-emu.org/Thread-su...exture-mod
Mostly Razius's files he supplied me and whatever SMG1 textures that readily worked. I had to finish some fonts, I added a few new textures including some items and environments, plus the title screen. There is a lot more to do when it comes to the environments and a few more icons and fonts to add before this will be complete. But considering the title and most of the UI is complete I think it's a good start. The download right now is a little bloated as I haven't been able to check all the environment textures and whether or not they work I will clean this up as I play through the game and can determine what can be deleted. 05-12-2015, 09:31 PM

So I still seem to have this problem while playing with the pack enabled (DDS). I'm using Ishiiruka, have full async shader compilation enabled, etc etc, but I still have stutters like this during gameplay.
I've got a pretty beefy computer, I'm overclocked to 4.5GHz on top of having a GTX 780, so I hope there's a way to minimize this stuttering on my system. It's more than just a little noticable, especially with the sound. Has anyone else resolved this issue on their own? If you could send me your config file, that would be awesome. Also, should I be using the PNG pack? I don't know which one is better at the moment. It might be worth mentioning that I'm missing a few textures when using the DDS pack, such as the Wii remote warning screen when I first turn the game on. Thanks! Edit: This was probably obvious, but the stuttering issues are 100% coming from the sheer size of the textures. Playing with them disabled results in absolutely zero lag or stuttering, even using LLE for audio. Just for fun, I put Dolphin and the textures on a RAMdisk, and the stuttering issues were reduced a tiny bit, but not completely. The stuttering on "press A and B" was certainly still there. CDAMJC, I know you want the texture pack to look as good as possible for everyone (and it is absolutely gorgeous), but I think you might want to consider offering a lower-resolution texture pack for those of us who will only ever play this in 1080p. The 4k textures don't necessarily benefit us that much, and, as this thread shows, they are causing performance issues on high-end desktops, even when using Ishiiruka. Perhaps it would benefit everyone to offer 3 packs: one for 4k, one for 1080p, and one for 720p for lower-end users. For most people, the loss in visual quality from 4k->1080p will be negligible at best, and the improved performance will more than make up for it. I see no drawbacks from having more options like this. A texture pack this amazing should not be hindered with stuttering issues! Also, is this normal? It only happens on the DDS pack, but I see this consistently each time I load the game. Screenshot:
I too feel this mod and the SMG2 mod, hell all of these texture mods, need different sizes. Right now it seems they are only aimed at the high end and even then can cause problems. Why not spend the extra hour or so and just make at least one 50% version for people that want the extra performance? This how most mods in the PC scene are made when it comes to textures. I see no reason not to offer it here. This is great work, but make it more accessible to others please.
Anyone can re-size these textures, if you have the time feel free to do it. It should not be the mod author's soul responsibility. If you as a user, know something you can do to make the mod work better for you, do it. I may re-size and upload when I have time, but complaining here will NOT make it happen any faster. I am not sure I want to release smaller textures when it is so easy to do so if you need to for your own setup. As time progresses these textures sizes will become the norm, from what I see it will be fairly soon (they are the norm for all graphically intensive new PC releases currently. It's most likely a waste of time for me to convert all of them and there is quality loss, which defeats the point of the mod. That said I fully intend to upload a DDS version of SMG2 as soon as I have a chance.
From the tone of the last comment, it seems people may feel I owe them my free time for this free mod. I don't. I work 55 plus hours a week currently and simply don't have the time to re-size the textures. When I do find a moment here and there I'd much rather add content to the mod. I share this mod to be generous and make others happy. I work on the mod for my creative outlet and to further develop my digital art skills. Usually I don't respond to these types of posts, but in this case re-sizing the files or even converting them to dds can be done by literally anyone. If you are to lazy to learn (Google) how or simply to do it, please don't post here. It's simply a waste of time because I will not hurry for such reasons. 05-26-2015, 08:26 PM

You either genuinely don't realize how much video bandwidth your pack uses, or couldn't care less about it because you spent two grand on your GPUs alone. Credit where it's due, it looks great, but you need to remember what you signed on for. You're a content creator, yet you've failed to cater to your audience here. Unlike you, not everyone has the money to SLI two Titans together. Seriously, it's overkill. The vast majority of the users on this forum have normal gaming cards; no SLI, no Titans, just normal, "gets the job done" cards. By any reasonably normal standards, the amount of video bandwidth your pack demands is quite high. At some point, the gain in visual fidelity either won't be visible enough to make a difference, or will require much more power than it's worth. And you know this. Instead of owning up to it and being even the least bit polite when asked for help, you've ignored it. All because your priceless, valuable time isn't to be wasted on mere peasants like us - all while staring down on us from the pedestal you've put yourself on. It's true that everyone has the ability to downsize these textures, but be honest with yourself - not everyone is that tech savvy. People see an emulator, spend three hours trying to figure out where the heck to download ROMs, and finally see a nice shiny texture pack they want to try out. Just step back for a moment and think about this reasonably. The requests you're getting aren't an indication of laziness. People are just used to texture packs working as-is, and when something goes awry, they ask for help elsewhere and get told that the textures are too big. Who better to ask for a proper resize than the pack creator himself? Heck, I didn't even know how to do it properly myself at first, and that script on the forums is no good for making them smaller. It requires a little but of work and know how, and, again, not everyone knows how to resize 1000+ images simultaneously. Look, you've done a good job here, but you're acting like a child. Everyone has real life obligations, and we respect that. But instead of throwing a fit, just compose yourself, politely point them in the right direction, and go about your day. Alternatively, you can read my post, get red in the face, flip your desk over and say "Okay, that's enough, these people are ungrateful and I refuse to be here any longer." At which point you'll abandon your projects for almost no reason, and completely disappear from the forum forever - all because you couldn't be bothered to show an ounce of courtesy. You seem to hold the opinion that we're all entitled brats who get to boss you around, but in reality, the only entitled person here is you.
Thank you so much for this texture pack CDAMJC.
It saddens me to hear so many complains all the time within the hi-res texture forums. Honestly (just my humble opinion), texture packs are purely optional and are not even required to use Dolphin properly. I mean... Dolphin already supports 1080p at 60 fps. You can even kick in texture filtering, anistopic filtering and more. Dolphin already has better image quality than the Wii itself. Even the WiiU does not seem to run Super Mario Galaxy 2 at 1080p. That having said. A good-made texture pack is always welcome. Surely, it requires an extra deal of processing power. But as you said it yourself CDAMJC, the future is comming and the norm for 4k will become standard at some point. I rather wait to buy stronger hardware once every few years and fully use 4k then, than being stuck at 1080 forever because no one bothered to have made 4k texture packs. However, ubergeek77. You could try to use some unofficial versions of Dolphin. Such as Ishiiruka or the custom build that supports prefetching texture files (but that would require a decent bit of RAM in your system). Both builds are easily found on the forums with a little bit of searching and for me it perfectly works without stutering. And no... I am not one of those guys with the latest and strongest hardware. I just upgrade to a powerful midrange system every few years. I do not know how far Dolphin is currently on fixing this issue for hi-res texture stuttering, but as I recall they are working on it (well... a while ago), hence the build that supports prefetching texture files. We should not forget that most of these guys that create texture packs do this in their free time and get nothing in return except for our gratitude. Texture packs are not build within one day. This takes time. This pack isn't even finished yet and we start complaining already? Give it time please or wait a few years and upgrade your system. Dolphin is not going anywhere and will still be available for you after years. Getting access to more powerful hardware gets cheaper after all each year. Good luck CDAMJC. Honestly said, while this pack is not complete, it feels for me like this is already more than enough quality this game should have. 05-26-2015, 10:01 PM

Come on, guys. He's absolutely right in that he has no obligation whatsoever to do anything here. It's not a product, it's his free time and he's sharing the result with us; which I'm happy about. He has no audience - you can take it or leave it, he couldn't care less.
I do also think there should be a performance pack. Not even because lower end cards don't get this pack working nicely, but because it seems that no matter how high end your card is, you will still get a little stutter every time a big texture (like everytime when fonts are shown); because of the way Dolphin/the game handles textures. So yeah, let's just forget that futile discussion and here's the pack rescaled and in DDS, still looking great and works absolutely smoothly for me: http://www.file-upload.net/download-1064...1.rar.html (don't forget to rename the folder if you're using the PAL version of the game) (I don't know if that hoster is any good. Anyone is free to upload it on any other hoster and/or put it in the first post.) Let's just enjoy this, aye? [EDIT: Ah, I was just writing my post when you, Admentus, posted, so my post wasn't directed at you ]
Intel i5-4690k (Devil's Canyon) @ 3.5 GHz (+Scythe Mugen) / Gainward GTX 1070 Phoenix (OC'd) / ASUS Z97 PRO GAMER / 16GB G.Skill DDR3-2400 CL10 TridentX / X-Fi XtremeMusic / Win10 Pro 64bit / Dell S2716DG Monitor / 3x original WiiMote+MotionPlus+Nunchuk
Look bud, I don't care what you do. The game is fine without the textures for people that cannot run it. I have no care or want to inform you how to spend your time. I gave you praise on the pack so.... lol. Your post was pretty ridiculous but that's okay too. I run a 970 @ 1486 and an i5 2500K @ 4.5 along with a very tidy system. My request was not even for me.
I'm just telling you how the mod scene generally works with texture packs and I AM NOT WRONG. No harm no foul. Don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm not telling you anything nor do I care what you do with your texture pack. I was giving you a suggestion. Can't handle it? Then don't. Please don't insinuate things about people. I made it absolutely clear, if people can read, that I have not even tried the pack and will wait for DDS. I am speaking for people who may want to use the pack with low-end systems. I run a system that has zero trouble with both Dolphin's unless I am bumping IR to absurd levels. I don't care either way. I generally go for the best quality packs. But I know there are plenty of users with shitty systems too. Anyway, great work. Keep it up. |
