I mean, if you haven't played Sun/Moon before, I can't see why not go Ultra, but the story looks like it takes place later (like B/W 2) so maybe not so good to just jump in.
I was really hoping for Stars instead of Pokken. Gen 8 maybe? At least Nintendo hasn't killed off the 3DS just yet. It's only been a few months since the Switch came out. Still, the 3DS is going to be put on notice sooner or later... 06-07-2017, 04:24 PM

Nintendo really wants to keep the 3DS alive--they've made that incredibly clear both by stating it outright and by their game releases *cough*Fire Emblem*cough*. So I can't really say I'm surprised that the new games aren't for the Switch, nor am I really that disappointed. A lot of people wanted a Gen IV remake, but I don't really see the point of that since all of the Gen IV games are still natively supported by the system, so there isn't really a need for a remake (I actually thought the same for Gen III, but I guess there are some people who only have a 3DS and don't have a regular DS).
As for the games themselves, I can't say anything yet because we don't even know if it's just a remake, or if it's a Black 2/White 2 style thing where we revisit the same locales, but with a different plot. All I can say is that those black plate things that Solgaleo and Lunala had on are definitely related to Necrozma, as if it weren't already obvious that Necrozma was going to be plot-important in some fashion. But I'm intrigued enough, and I'm a die-hard Pokemon fan, so I know I'll be buying it either way. One thing I hope they do with it is improve the performance--Sun and Moon somehow managed to run even worse than XYORAS did. The only thing I'm REALLY miffed about is the fact that only Gold and Silver are coming to the VC, not Crystal. I never go back and play GS because Crystal is so obviously the better version. 06-07-2017, 08:39 PM

I played all gens, played competitively in tournaments, got all available black/gold trainer cards in the versions of each gen until Sun/Moon. I got all the stamps and my festival plaza is on lv100. Never will replay again since it bored me to death with too many cutscenes. No respect for my time. I guess it was time for me to quit Pokemon altogether since the majority of people liked it so maybe I grown out of this attachment? And performance will probably remain the same just like how ORAS didn't improve over XY. It was already pushing the 3DS to its limit to the point where they had to cut out triple and rotation battles anyways. 06-08-2017, 12:25 AM
Even homebrew doesn't really help. I have a New 3DS and a full CFW setup, so I always have the higher clock and L2 cache, but the games still lag horribly when there's more than 2 Pokemon on the screen. And yeah, I doubt they'll fix it up since the same thing happened with ORAS, but I still really want it to happen.

They've been pumping out FE games like candy this gen though. And they've been tossing out mainline Pokemon games on the 3DS similarly. I don't think Echoes or Ultra Sun/Moon themselves prove that Nintendo is totally committed to the 3DS come this time 2018. If anything, those two franchises are mainstays that they can afford to produce relatively quickly and put them on the market. I'm just playing devil's advocate, but one could look at this as throwing the system a few bones before putting the old 3DS out to pasture. I'd need to see something else in the pipeline. Actions versus words, you know. When was the last time they promised a system would be kept relevant, and that they didn't intend any/much cannibalization? I don't doubt they want to keep the 3DS alive for as long as possible (and as a huge 3DS fan, I want that). They hopefully learned their lesson with the GBA-NDS transition that wasn't supposed to be a transition. I mean, giving up on two revenue streams (console and handheld) for a single, unified console isn't something that should happen overnight, especially since Nintendo has been in the portable market for decades. So here's hoping that Nintendo keeps the 3DS around longer (and other 3rd party devs help make it so). The only thing is that they have to play this balancing act (e.g. Switch gets some headline grabbing titles, 3DS gets others). Too much on the Switch kills the 3DS too soon. Too much on the 3DS could possibly stunt the large enthusiasm the Switch has garnered so far. I know a lot of people were disappointed that Pokemon Stars wasn't a thing after all, for example. |
