I originally wanted to learn Japanese because all of the cool Pokemon trading cards were in Japanese, and they always had them before anyone else :p

If you're making $15-25 before overtime, getting paid time and a half is fairly attractive. If you're already working full-time hours (30-40, it depends on the company) some may be satisfied without overtime (again, depending on base pay). 12-15-2013, 12:41 PM
90% of the time it's not worth it no matter what job you have. Although that's usually because they offer or make you do overtime during the worst possible times when they are severely understaffed (it should be obvious why). Or days when nobody else will come in. It's a necessary evil though since most businesses can't keep up with peak demand or provide flexible scheduling to the higher ups without it. I feel sorry for people working at fedex/UPS around this time of the year. Maybe you can give us some insight on that. I imagine a long assemble line style workstation lined with workers and a single Chinese man with a long whip yelling "mush" and whipping furiously in all directions .

Obviously you've never worked OT with a job around ~$20+/hour Most employers hate OT no matter where you go, so you'll only be working 2~3 hours in any reasonable job situation. Time and a half for 2 hours at that rate nets you gas money for the week, or just think of it as giving you the check you should have had without income tax. Once you start getting your very own bills, you'll appreciate not having to work two jobs if you don't have to, even if that means going crazy for a week or so on the one job you do have. Yeah it's nothing like that. :p Most of the "assembly line" image you probably have in your head comes from the Memphis, TN facility, but most of that stuff is automated. You just have to push the boxes in the right direction, pick them up and such when necessary. Sort of like working checkout in Wal Mart, I guess, but with boxes. The whole month of December is intense for just about every branch of Fedex though, no exceptions. It's not hectic, but everyone gets more hours, I'll tell you that. I have no clue about UPS, but given that they're the default shipping method for Amazon, I'd say they're getting flooded this time of the year too. The USPS has their hands full with letters to Santa. Cute, but not profitable. @admin89 - お誕生日おめでとうございます! He's probably lost like $5-$8k in overtime pay by now. |
