I've been playing SMS on the Dolphin emulator for a while. I must say that, for a first-party title, this game is very playable, even on slower CPUs. However, I have ran into several bugs, some not yet described. I play the NTSC version of the game.
There is one particular special stage that seems to suffer from some sort of problem. It's the one right behind the cannon that launches Mario to Pinna Park. You need to cross the trees with a perfectly timed triple jump or use the Rocket Nozzle to reach the pipe that leads to the area in question. Whereas I'm able to get the rest of the game running at full speed (or mostly), I can't get any more than 20 FPS here. Not only that, but I get frequent error messages that appear like this:
Warning
FIFO is overflown by GatherPipe !
CPU thread is too fast, try changing the watermark tightness in the game properties.
Unlike the FIFO problem mostly associated with SMS, this seems to only adhere in this level. The game continues its chug in the level if I select Yes, and, if I select No, Dolphin crashes.
This problem has occurred in all builds of Dolphin I've tried, from the stable 2.0 to several SVN builds in between, up to r6023. Does anyone else suffer from this? If not, how should I configure Dolphin? I've tried everything and get no positive results.
Specs:
HP Pavilion p6230y PC (I know, never buy casual PCs from these companies. I'm hoping to upgrade the components soon.)
64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium
AMD Phenom II X4 810 Processor @ 2.6 Ghz (unclockable)
ATI Radeon HD 4200 Integrated Graphics (integrated GFX fail)
8GB DDR3 System Memory
