So im building a new PC and am wondering if it would be worth spending the extra cash on a 3rd gen i5 or saving abit and getting a 2nd gen.

I already have a case and 750watt PSU and the mobo i'm buying is
ASUS P8Z77-V LX Intel® Z77 ATX Motherboard - 1155 socket

my current HD 7770 will be going into the new build for now.

I mostly play GC games as i dont own a wii console or any games and have little intrest in them (except the zelda ones that is)
Go for 3570k
Get the Core i5-3570k and a decent CPU cooler and overclock it to 4.2GHZ Cool

-> Success

Edit: Ninja'd by LordVador (once again)
That mobo deffo supports 3rd gen then?
Intel® Socket 1155 for 2nd Generation Core™ i7/Core™ i5/Core™ i3/Pentium®/Celeron® Processors Supports Intel® 22 and 32nm CPU

Im assuming they just didn't directly say it does but i know 3rd gen use 22nm
Yep, this MoBo supports Ivy Bridge CPUs, don't worry.
P67 , Z68 -> Sandy
Z75 , Z77 -> Sandy & Ivy
P67 , Z68 + bios update -> Ivy (Do at your own risk)

Just get i5 3570k on microcenter.com (170$)
If you want a cheaper mobo , Asrock Z77 Extreme 4 will do (OC to 4.4GHz just fine)

Cool thx, was pretty sure it did just wanted to make sure.
also is there a possibility of any overclock on the intel cooler? will have to wait till next month to buy a after market cooler as rent and bills sadly come first Sad
Play at stock speed. It will do the job for most games anyway Big Grin

Yes but becareful with the temp and voltage
4.0GHz should be doable
Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo is dirt cheap and it works very well , you should get one
Unless the price is much different get 3570k.
A 3570k is roughly 5-8% faster at same speed, and clocked 100 MHz higher.

It is as easy getting a 2500k to 4.5 as for a 3570k to 4.2.
A 3570k is using less power, so total cost of an 3570k will always be lower,
a 2500k will use roughly 0.1KWh each day more, so depending on your electricity prices.. you get the point.

I got a 2500k just after 3570k was released, and i do not regret it, the 2500k was considerably cheaper probably because my retailer would clear some stock.

I read on forum people are still debating which CPU is the fastest, where as 3570k is faster pr clock, but 2500k does have more potential OC.
If you don't plan on OC a 3570k is better, since the 2500k must reach around 3600-3700MHz to match the stock 3570k.
In the end, both are excellent CPUs, and the two best cost efficient CPus for dolphin (and most other stuff too)

Also, as admin89 points out the 212 evo is very decent cooling for very little money.
A cooler is like the only thing that can increase your computing power by 10-25% in a $1000+ system for less than $30 :p
