Here's that brushed metal transparency. Obviously you can turn the layer if you need the brushed metal grain to go in the other direction.

Since frozen will repair that fail redraw try of Fiora's starter weapon I made, I don't want to waste his work and time by attempting anything more on it and decided to try again with another starter weapon, Shulk's one.
Here is a preview of one part I have redraw, it's not finished (edge shadows are actually crap and need to be fully redone, still don't get how you made them so clean and natural) but tell me if you think the global look and rusted effect is good or not : Spoiler:

It's not a waste of time if you're getting some experience. I should be home in a few hours and I can maybe give some tips about how I do shadows.
I just wanted to drop in and say I like that rough metal look on that part of the sword. 07-13-2015, 07:22 AM
@Frozenwings: I did not think waste of time in that sense, I mean it's better to let you finish the work instead of do things worse while you will definitly improve it.
Still have hard times with edge shadows...No matter what I try it's not as clean and well done as what you show me on Fiora's starter weapon...I think I do not use the paint brush as it should...

A little update before going to bed, I think i ended up with acceptable egde shadows on the part I worked, it sure will take me several more hours to do the remaining parts...

I think it all looks really good so far. The blade is a little dark, but that can be easily fixed by adjusting the brightness and perhaps lowering the opacity on the brushed metal layer.

This is a simple method which may help with those edge shadows or at least give you some ideas on how to make them more easily. http://i.imgur.com/lhhjKZL.png 07-13-2015, 02:12 PM

^Yup, Bighead's tutorial is good. What I do is use paths to cut out nearly every piece of a texture and put it on its own layer. With each piece, you can shade directly on the layer, or put a layer behind it and shade along the edges. You can also put a new layer over the main layer and shade that part and then adjust the layer opacity to where you want it.
Basically, paths is almost like cheat mode if you can master it. Each path is saved too in it's own tab (up by the layers tab), so you can pull out an old path any time. You can also export and import paths between different XCF files, which is nice for a game like this since there are a few textures that sometimes share the exact same parts. Having the paths already done for this parts not only saves time, but also helps preserve the shape of the part for consistency. 07-13-2015, 07:55 PM
@Bighead : thx for the tuto, really useful, I feel dumb to not have discover that before...
A little update of the work in progress, I remade 2 rusted parts, the blade and the yellow metal thing (still miss it's shadows for now) so far : Spoiler: Anyway, I will try to make something good and for the possible remaining bad parts (pretty sure there will be some) I will request Frozenwings or Bighead superpowers
