Since Frozenwings is doing his best to offer great redraws, I've decided to jump off the cliff and try to fully redraw a texture too...the result was far too bad if you compare it to Frozen's work, I definitly do not know GIMP enough to challenge him...Perhaps in 10 years
So, I've decided to combine both my rework mess and my poor redraw skills and the result is interesting, let me know if you think it's deverve a release or not : Spoiler:

You're definitely on the right track. A couple criticisms -
-The blue light beam has a dark blue -> light blue -> dark blue -> light blue transition that is lost in the rework -The middle three cutout things look like they have some smudging under each of them -The middle cutout things have a dark outline on the left edge of each that gives it a weird effect -The bottom of the handle (around the light beam) loses some of the lighting/shading in the rework -The side of the blade and the blade edge are missing the brushed metal look -The side of the blade (the dark part) is a little too dark. All around, it's a very nice base but just some details need work. The grip on the handle looks especially nice. I would just keep at it until you get it perfect. Sometimes I have to take a break for a few days from a texture to rethink my method and to see if anything gives me ideas. For example, I've been trying to rework those green horns on Riki's nibbler weapon and I just can't get it to how I like it. So I'm putting it down for a couple days until I can come up with something. If you're unable to get it perfect, please upload the XCF GIMP file because this is an excellent base to a redraw and I wouldn't want it lost forever. I can definitely work with what you have done so far.
I tried to correct the fails you spotted, I don't think I can do better than this, I still don't know how to render shadows/lightnings and color graduation the right way, it piss me off to do sh*t like this...
Spoiler: EDIT : Ok Fixed, the more I see this, the more I feel ashamed and want to hide this crap...

Nah, dude. That looks a lot better than before.
Still some small issues -The three middle oval shapes still have those smudges under them. -There is also a small dark crease / line in the middle part of the edge that I didn't notice last time. -The blade looks kind of gritty rather than like smooth, brushed aluminum. Remember, upload your XCF file if you can't get it better or get tired of it. I've tried to give people advice before and they just gave up never to return. The XCF at least gives us a place to start. Also, sometimes other people can see things from a different perspective. I've sent Bighead stuff to touch up, and he's sent me some stuff too. Sometimes it just takes two people to finish these. Edit - Bighead and I do a ton of background work that doesn't even show up in this thread. We communicate and share work by IM 95% of the time so we don't clutter this thread with craziness. So just because you don't see us talking or getting help from each other, don't think we aren't. Edit - I'm pretty busy this weekend so I probably won't be working on any retextures again until next week. 07-11-2015, 05:25 AM
I just trashed the rework and apply the thing I call redraw on the top of a simply cleaned vanilla texture. I think it still not good so forget it, I just cannot redraw things on a computer, I simply do not have the talent to do it like you. I'm sure you can easily and quickly do a perfect redraw of this simple texture btw...
Spoiler: Anyway, sorry for all this

No way, dude. It's not a waste of time at all for me. Nobody else really contributes a whole lot anymore since weapons/armors/environments are all trickier to do and there's not really a lot more left.
I honestly really look forward to your retextures, even if they aren't complete redraws. They are usually much more clean and clear than the default textures. Also, before you started doing stuff, I was doing a retexture every few months. In the past month I think I've done 3 or 4. You really inspired me to get back into it. In regards to your own skills - practice makes perfect. Just keep at it and keep pushing yourself and trying new things. I could barely draw a circle in GIMP a little over two years ago when I started working on this project. I still don't consider myself that great, I can pull off decent stuff after a lot of time spent. I've dumped about 15-20 hours into that Riki texture so far, so it doesn't come quick. It's a lot of trail and error for hours on end and sometimes I just get lucky and stuff looks good somehow. Like I said above, sometimes I have to take breaks for a few days because I'm just so stuck on something. I just keep at it, play around with different things, and eventually stuff comes out looking better. 07-11-2015, 07:28 AM
I don't want to let you down so I retried from scratch, full redraw this time with a pitifull attempt to recreate shadows. I think it still trash and ridiculous when I see your work but at least I've improved a little with GIMP so it's not a total waste of time

Yeah, that's looking really nice. The blade and blue light beams look good. I would make the side part a little more gray (it kinda looks a little tan) and then apply that same brushed metal look from the blade to the side part.

Ok, here is the final version, I pretty sure I cannot do better considering my lack of skills. Since it's a starter weapon you will see for about 1h or so I think it's acceptable and better than nothing. Until someone else do a better work it does the trick
