If anything, I think consoles like the PS5 are going that route with SSDs because their RAM capacities are going to lag behind gaming PCs. 16GB in the PS5 is already arguably skimpy compared some PC builds these days. Can't blame them as they've got a price-point to hit.

I doubt developers would miss an opportunity to make use of the massive amounts of RAM on PCs in the future. In a few years, most of us will be sticking 64GB or more in our systems as the minimum, most likely. Obviously an SSD would definitely help initially loading all that stuff to RAM compared to an HDD, but I see the SSDs on upcoming consoles as overcoming a memory limitation that PCs don't necessarily have.

the SSD is imo to beat loading times, which are a bain to consoles. this is something PC's also don't have because they don't have a 2,5" (max) 5200 rpm hdd's (and if you do, i assume you had to cut some costs?)

and i disagree with the RAM thing.
i have 16GB ram, its more than enough to what i need for my uses (this includes Photoshop and lightroom with pictures of 4000x3000).
i am not going to end up wasting even more money on RAM just to run a game.
If you don't, games would quickly run towards a swapping hell if they did what you are suggesting.
Games these days often use packed files of + 4GB a piece.
lets assume you are going to load 3 of those files in RAM. 12GB constantly used by your game ( + Windows = more than 16GB is needed. and lets be honest, 12GB game is very very very very small).

...and we aren't even extracting, decompressing or doing anything with the content of those packed files...

so no, unless you want to stop earning money on people that can't waste +/- 1200€ on a gaming rig (or buy unstable budget shit), this is really not going to work

16GB is enough for gaming today, but some AAA titles are starting to push that. Horizon Zero Dawn eats anywhere from 13-15GB for me. RAM sizes increase regardless as higher capacities get cheaper to produce over time. It never stays at one point, even when it's enough for some. In the next decade, your run-of-the-mill consumer PC or phone could easily come with 32GB of RAM, at least that's how I see it. I don't see how game developers won't take advantage of that.

The price for those amounts of RAM is going to go down to affordable levels where it won't even be a consideration to go with less. Case in point, you can find relatively cheap laptops (sub $500 USD) with 8GB of RAM these days. Back in 2010 that would have cost you an arm and a leg. Now it's just standard for that range of laptops.

For concerns like packed files, it's possible to read out specific segments of a file without loading the entire file into RAM. This is basic I/O in something like C or C++; just point to a file and an offset and start reading. That's what games are doing today as far as I know. The difference increasing RAM sizes will make is that you can unpack a lot more of that file, meaning you don't have to touch storage again for certain assets.

The suspense is killing me and I've started buying things (I wanted to wait till major sale like Prime Day and Black Friday, but I'm not entirely convinced there will even be any good deals) at a faster rate (I was shooting for putting it all together on Christmas day) and higher price than intended XD

Spoiler: (Show Spoiler)
Meaning I bought 2 PCI-E 4.0 NVMe Drives, a 1TB MLC and a 2TB QLC

Edit: o hey look! one of the drives went on sale a few hours after I bought it >.> Guess I'll have to message CS for them to tell me to suck it up Smile

I'm unconvinced SSDs will be a hard requirement for next-gen console games for a few years yet. People tend to like being able to play a game and then play a different game without two hours of installation time in between, but the launch models of the new consoles have pretty meagre capacities, so would only fit at best a single game of the scope the announcement speeches described. In a few years, the refreshes will definitely come with bigger capacities and you'll get replacement SSDs for the launch models (and maybe even the odd game that comes preinstalled onto an SSD like in the cartridge era), but the first couple of waves of games won't be able to rely on that. The only way I see them doing so is if they push a misinformation campaign eye-can-only-see-24-FPS style where they somehow convince people waiting to install games is a good thing.
OS: Windows 10 64 bit Professional
CPU: Intel i5 4670K @3.4GHz... for now @4.6GHz with a quick and dirty (yet stable) OC. May get faster in a bit before the end of time.
RAM: 16GB (Down from 24 GB after some was given to siblings)
GPU: Radeon Vega 56

Yuzu uses more than 16GB of Ram (more like 22GB) though it's still early and this is tested with latest Nvidia driver that fixed Memory Leak (Ram) on Cemu

Well, after Prime Day it looks like I've got everything purchased expect for the CPU, so fingers crossed I can actually get one.

Thanks to the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S coming out this holiday. I figured that picking up an RTX 3070, 1440P monitor and an SSD would be my go to items to get for the holiday. I had a lengthy discussion regarding monitors/GPU on discord a few weeks ago on Discord, but I figured that it would be best to go ahead and jump on the 1440P monitor (while still retaining that sweet 144 hz).

If only I could pick up a cartridge hd for my... Naw that won't work.
Do not distribute!

Looks like I'll be trading my 2070 for a Super. Also I bought some 3600 RAM, but now leaks are saying you want 3800 Sad

Think we're blowing the whole SSD and RAM thing way outta proportion, there's no game that will be released in the next 5 years that'll stop you from playing because your RAM or HDD isn't fast enough.
......?????

There already is one - Star Citizen. It requires an SSD due to how the game handles its streaming; an HDD was effectively designed out of the game. And exactly what's going to happen to more games as they start being designed for speedy SSD consoles in a world where most PCs have SSDs in them~
