Thoughts on new PC build (ZEN 3)

Even if a game doesn't require it, I would very much like to be able to take advantage of as many features as possible.

I might commandeer this thread a bit, then. Back in 2013, it was this forum that helped me decide on my last motherboard, and now there's controversy whether I should get a B550 or an X570. The B550 team has a ~£50-£100 price advantage, and the X570 team has the advantage of nebulous claims about how extra PCIe 4.0 lanes will help me in the future without actually giving any examples of things they'd be good for. Both teams think I shouldn't go for the bottom end of the chipset and should get a higher-end board.

In 2013, NaturalViolence told me to get one of three ASRock boards, then they were all out of stock, so after a bit of back-and-forth, it was settled that I should get the cheapest Z87 board with Crossfire and SLI support and reasonable reviews, and that worked well. I've not really heard any non-nebulous claims about why that strategy wouldn't work with B550 or X570.

Maybe the Dolphin forums can come to my aid once again.

Personally I went with x570 because the B550 board I wanted was the same price. After that I ended up getting 2 PCIe 4 SSDs so it worked out. Was any of this necessary? Probably not.

Edit: I also wanted as much bandwidth as possible for "future proofing"

I keep getting told that the X570 is the same price, but it's £50 more expensive here.

I guess it depends on how long you plan to use it. If it's supposed to last a long time, i would go for one which has 4 additional pcie gen 4 lanes for a fast SSD. I kinda doubt that you will need it, but it's possible that all the bs marketing talk from microsoft and sony about their ssds and how it will be necessary contains some truth, and then you want the option to put in an actually fast ssd in the future. Well, if it's not that much a price hike. There's some DX12 extension which will allow direct SSD access for the GPU or something. If that really becomes a big thing, you will need a fast ssd.

Oh, and when getting a Zen 3 cpu, i highly recommend to a get 4 stick memory kit as it stands now:

preferably with really low latency. I read that there's some upcoming DDR4-3600 CL14 memory, which sounds really nice. Well, it depends on the price of course. But 50 bucks here might be more worth than a 5800X over a 5600X according to Gamers Nexus' benchmark results of both cpus. (but that's a really small sample size)

Saw that video as well, I have dual rank memory sticks so it should have the same effect. I think 3600 CL14 already exists with Samsung B-Die, doesn't make it cheap tho XD

Yeah, i have been wondering if dual rank memory sticks will have the same effect. I'm hoping for Gamers Nexus to include that in the next video about Zen 3 and RAM. Ok, i have looked into the prices, holy s***, i think it'd go for something like 3600 CL16 too.

There are already 4 PCIe 4.0 lanes for an SSD with B550. It's only if you want several top-end SSDs that X570's extra lanes help. Also, a medium-end PCIe 3.0 SSD will already outperform what's in the new consoles. They run NVMe over PCIe 3.0, and either chipset has plenty of PCIe 3.0 lanes.

Correct, you will also only have 1 16x PCIe lane as well, but I don't think that is really necessary for much either.
