That's offtopic. Also, in my case cpu and graphics are bundled in one chip - looks bad even with a solder-iron.
Speedup in Linux
|
Fwiw, Dolphin doesn't have any optimizations for SSE4A or SSSE3, SSE 3.1 is enabled by default already. Just enabling compiler optimizations for the former instruction sets won't give you any noticeable performance improvement.
About thread priority, that stuff is called "niceness" iirc, but I don't think it'll improve performance either. 11-28-2011, 04:24 PM
Quote:Fwiw, Dolphin doesn't have any optimizations for SSE4A or SSSE3 Are your sure on that? When opening a game, dolphin lists found extensions, SSSE3 and SSE4A included. There are pre-compiled builds for every extensions as well as all-in-one-bundles. To not loose focus, these are the mentioned linux-tweaks: -Recompile Kernel with Config_Hz=1000 enabled ( LOL someone really gave me that suggestion!). No 'way - I don't recompile kernels - linux-nerds can do that for me. Everyone giving this advices deserves to die. -Changing niceness -using ALSA instead of Pulse for Audio -Using Opensuse 12.1 -booting in command-line and starting dolphin with xinit, avoiding kde starting in background (did I get that right?) ...something else? I use the official ATI-drivers of course - all filters, extras and alike are of course switched off already. I'm sure in linux most background-stuff is just unnecessary. Changing niceness and switching off desktop-environment sounds most promising to me.
I was suggesting the kernel recompilation because it's the only thing (apart from changing to the alsa sound backend) which isn't a waste of time.
Yes I'm sure there aren't any optimizations of the Dolphin code for SSE4A or SSSE3, there are builds optimized for that because people are stupid (like I said, speedup from compiler optimizations is almost negligible).
My suggestion:
- Format (delete) your Linux partition and install Windows 7 SP1 64-bit - Install the latest DirectX, .NET and MSVC runtimes - Install the latest AMD Catalyst driver (v11.11) and the latest Realtek driver for your sound chip - Disable Aero / compositing completely: open Administrative Tools -> Services and set the 'Desktop Window Manager Session Manager' service to 'Disabled' - Disable all those resource-sucking services you don't need (Superfetch, System Restore, Windows Search, Automatic Disk Defragmenter, Windows Defender, AMD FUEL Service) - Open the Task Scheduler and disable the automated WinSAT performance assessment check - Get rid of the AMD Catalyst Control Center: Install CCleaner (www.piriform.com/ccleaner) and use the Startup Tool to disable this monstrosity from starting up. Reboot the PC. - Download the vanilla 64-bit build of Dolphin r6515 from here (fastest build for AMD CPUs): http://www.dolphin-emu.org/download.html...arch=win64 If you have any game that's not compatible with this superfast build, use the latest GIT snapshot: http://www.dolphin-emu.org/download.html...arch=win64 - If you must use a lightweight realtime Antivirus scanner, I recomment the OLD version of AntiVir Free: http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/tech/6685/ NOTE: Windows XP 32-bit runs like crap on modern multicore AMD CPUs (Athlon II, Phenom II, Bobcat, Llano, Bulldozer FX) . Avoid it like the plague. Windows 7 is much more efficient. 11-29-2011, 09:13 AM

I wanna speed up linux and not switching to an even slower and heavier OS. Kirbypuff, most of your mentioned options just don't exist in XP. Are you sure you didn't forget some? I believe you that a 32-Bit-version is slower than a 64-bit-one. I don't believe you Win7 is faster than XP. Maybe I should install XP-64 - but I just don't want now. Up to now linux is running best for my netbook and dolphin. Please continue gathering linux-tweaks. It's the only threat like this and there still is this fast 6515-build, of which there must be a linux-version somewhere. 11-29-2011, 11:26 AM
Quote:Maybe I should install XP-64 Never! Do not use XP 64. It is a repackaged version of Server 2003 64 and only works with older builds.

...older builds of dolphin?! Then it's a development-failure. XP still is the most used OS worldwide and NT-based. Actually most of today's software should even run on Win2K and NT. Never heard of a Win7-only-program.
Newer builds still work on a 32 bit XP.
(But then again, I agree it was a failure to remove 64 bit XP compatibility for no reason) |
