So yeah, after re-watching the Smash direct, I can see what they tried to achieve with Spirits. The former explanation was confusing and boring, sounding like a horrible hybrid between Smash4 customisation and Brawl stickers. But it all makes sense with the Story mode, they should have started with it.
Like, in Story mode, spirits are secondary characters that controls fighters, giving them special abilities. You defeat them, you can equip them and gain their abilities. Also, they're artwork collectibles. Boom. Crystal clear.
Definitively less hyped than usual for Smash 5, especially the solo content, but will still buy it for the versus mode.
