So finally I got employed, this time I did well on the company's programming test, and now they think I am a genius for a change. Still, I would rather judge the statistical significance of 40+ university exams, but what do I know about hiring

Companies don't work that way, I learned that too ha ha. Grades do matters, but they want to test you anyway based on what matters for them. Sometimes it's well done, sometimes it's just dumb.
