First Wave Feminism had a lot of success, but it primarily focused with some pretty basic preliminary things, like treating women as people through property rights and the right to vote. But it was pretty gentle in its approach, and stalled out. So many activist became upset at the lack of progress, and started pushing HARD. Second Wave was built on this frustration energy, and charged ahead bringing up topics society just wanted to ignore, like rape, domestic violence, gender discrimination in the work place, contraception, on and on. But that frustration energy caused Second Wave Feminism to turn extreme toward its end, pushing out other non-whites and non-cis women, leading to tons of infighting which destroyed Second Wave Feminism from the inside. Modern Third Wave Feminism grew in the aftermath of second wave feminism, and is much more inclusive and much less antagonistic. Third Wave Feminism focuses on bringing down stereotypes and gender restrictions for everyone, so everyone can have a better life and be who they are! Thanks for the links! I didn't know much about this. Glad to see this presented in a non-biased and calm manner. Whenever this is brought up anywhere else, all I walk out with is a lot of confusion and a headache from all the shouting.
Second Wave Feminism was so "in your face" that many people still think that is what feminism is, but in reality that was just a tiny phase of a hundred years of feminism!

@major, thanks for the info, I didn't know there were terms for periods of feminism. I feel like the only feminism I've been exposed to was the second wave feminism in recent years.

The hardline or extremist feminism was harmful, but that goes for any philosophy/point of view/belief. Taking any idea to the extremes causes all sorts of trouble. The basics of modern feminism, that everyone should be treated equally and respectfully regardless of gender, haven't ruined anything.
Feminism and other civil rights movements have accomplished a tremendous amount of good! In western countries, christian white hetero cis males were the only group to have full freedom and rights. That is a very small part of the population, leaving most of the population suppressed and unable to live to their potential. By giving these groups the same rights as the formerly privileged, it allows the entire population to live to their potential, giving more perspectives in art and science and technological innovation, more people working productively, and more people happily pursuing their dreams. This leads to a better economy and society overall. Equality helps everyone!
