So the fine folks over at 4chan post some incredibly cruel, inhuman, and exploitative comments about her transgender status. That doesn't explain why she didn't just stay away from 4chan. Was rachelb having life problems, IRL discrimination or troubles

You all know me, Maverick Hunter X/Duke Nukem....
But I'm not here to cause any trouble because I've just read what have happened to Rachel and it's a fucking tragedy and I've come to show my respect. I'm sending my deepest condolences to her friends and family. I might have been an jack-ass around here sometimes but I'm not a heartless fucktard like the fuckers at 4chan. What have happened is....I don't know what to say more then I'm shocked. She did so much for this community and Dolphin and now she's dead. Those fuckers at 4chan, I hope they get their punishment someday. 04-28-2015, 06:52 AM
Dedicated to beautiful RACHEL BRYK
May blossoms adorn her pathway, Lord, when to you her spirit and to the world her skin shall return, when she comes to your heaven, there where in broad daylight the stars shine bright. When she crosses the last old bridge, to the suicides she will say, kissing them on the forehead, "Come you all to Paradise, there where I too am going, because there's no Hell in the world of the good Lord." Make it so she joins You with her tired bones, followed by thousands of those white faces. Make it so she returns to You, in contempt among the dead, who to heaven and to earth displayed their courage. All you right-thinking sirs, I hope not to displease you if in heaven, in the midst of the saints, God, in her embrace, will hush the sob of those pale lips that, over hatred and ignorance, prefer death. God of mercy, your beautiful Paradise you have made, above all, for whoever didn’t smile, for those who lived with a clear conscience. Hell exists only for those who fear it. None better than she can ever show you the errors of us all, whom you can and do want to save. Listen to her voice that now sings in the wind. God of mercy, you will see, you will be pleased. Perhaps we could alter the About screen on the emulator to reflect her passing. Like, a simple "R.I.P. RachelB"?

I don't want to be disrespectful here, but... it's well known that unmoderated places on the internet visited by large masses of people - such as youtube or reddit - are full of not only immature people, but jerks and utter fucktards as well*. Far more so on 4chan, since it's anonymous. Expecting any kind of decency on 4chan seems to be about as optimistic as expecting the comments on a controversial youtube video to consist of nothing but intelligent debate.
Please don't get me wrong - I am in no way saying that what those people on 4chan said was right, or excusable, or anything of the kind. It absolutely is wrong, and they, if not caused, at least directly contributed to the death of a person through simple asshattery. What I am saying, however, is that that's what can be expected on 4chan, especially so if you're among the more controversial groups of society, e.g. trans. I guess my point comes down to two things: first, any sane person should, if they feel like using 4chan, simply ignore all the irrelevant hate. And definitely not let those posts influence your life decisions. However, a sane and emotionally stable person wouldn't consider suicide in the first place, so I don't think it's appropriate to blame Rachel for taking those people seriously. My second point, though, is that there's nothing that can be done really, and that writing up death threats or getting angry at 4chan, or reddit, or other places like that won't do jack shit. It's in the nature of those sites to be like that. Avoiding them is often the best measure. *Irrelevant to the whole point, but now that I think about it, imgur, although sort of a derivative of reddit, has a surprisingly civil community. Especially for a site that was originally meant to be little more than an image repository.

While these dregs of society systematically bring everyone else down with them? This behavior wasn't commonplace prior to the internet and the internet itself isn't responsible for such atrocious and immature behavior. This has been going on and only accelerated with introduction of the WWW and anonymity it provides. Nowadays such behavior and lack of respect is becoming the norm. We are either heading towards wiping out our own species i.e. complete extinction or at least the weak, weak minded and unproductive dregs of society being wiped out by due natural process. Alternatively we are heading towards a state of idiocracy and not like is exaggerated in the movie. Look, I said I wasn't being serious. I was just angry and upset that's all. This stuff hits me really hard not only the passing of RachelB but the mentality of these kids. I obviously know that isn't realistic nor would that ever happen. When I get worked up I don't think rationally, does anyone really? Anger causes us to think and say a lot of things it doesn't mean we actually endorse, condone or would follow through with it. Btw you weren't implying these kids are smart were you? I hope not. Some smart, rich people may be douchebags but they don't usually resort to jackassery like this. I've never seen typical, productive and intelligent members of society act in this fashion and are usually more reserved. I give props to everyone that is taking it so well however some, like myself don't handle such things so well. However I've calmed down since then hence why I'm back. 04-28-2015, 11:18 AM
^ If so, my apologies for taking that out of context. I was reading comments in the Kotaku article and I am really surprised at the majority of comments sans a few being very sympathetic. At least there's still good in some places on the internet.

Yes, I was making fun of the "I'm going to beat the stupid out of them!" attitude because it's pretty well known that the only effect a beating can have on intelligence is to reduce it substantially.
The people that made the comments that got you so worked up will probably find this thread and laugh more about how they made one of this site's leaders make an internet tough guy post. As a moderator I expect you to show a little more emotional restraint. |
