There are people here that know about surround sound, aren't there? My dad's NUC, when set to 5.1 over HDMI, only actually manages to send the left and right channels as far as the speaker, except when mono sound is played, in which case it always goes through the centre speaker. The setup is vaguely as follows:
NUC (but other machines have been tested)
HDMI
LG Smart TV with speakers set to external on the auto setting (which is passthrough for some formats, and PCM48 for others)
Optical TOSLINK
Sony Surround Amp (which predates HDMI, but has Optical TOSLINK and DVD Coaxial surround, as well as a rather effective stereo to surround converter)
5 pairs of wires
The 5 main speakers out of a 5.1 setup, but no subwoofer.
The possibilities for testing what's going on are reduced, as we haven't worked out how to send a signal through to the speakers without some kind of extra interpolated surround, even over the several years we've owned this amp, but it'd still be nice to make this work without buying a new amp.
