I was hoping for motherboard choice advice, but an admission of idiocy will do too, I suppose.
More info: The OEM version of the CPU is without a fan, which I won't need, as I'm using a better cooler.

The ancient Greeks could do this, and yet we have an argument about the best way to do it without coming up with a reliable answer? The problem is nobody has done this yet and I doubt anyone here will want to risk damaging their PS3 this way just to find the volume. Also assuming there is any air inside the bag this still wouldn't be fully accurate. Even if you subtract the volume of the empty bag. AnyOldName3 Wrote:So, does anyone know of a good Z87 board? Anything by Asrock. What type of audio setup do you have? AnyOldName3 Wrote:Also, CPU cooler wise, is the recommendation still Hyper 212 Evo, or is there something better/the same but cheaper? The 212 is £25, and this links to Scan Computers list of compatible CPU coolers, just in case anyone who knows anything is willing to check for bargains. Probably. But the evo is good enough for the money that I wouldn't bother looking. AnyOldName3 Wrote:Thermal paste of choice is still Arctic Thermal MX4? Sure. The truth is most thermal pastes have temperatures so close to each other during benchmarks that it's within the margin of error. And most of them are made of the same compounds. Any non-conductive paste by any reputable brand will work just fine. AnyOldName3 Wrote:Also, if I'm offered a retail 4670K for £190, and an OEM version for £185, I'm fine with the OEM one, as I don't need a pretty box (or whatever the difference is)? The difference is the OEM version doesn't come with a stock cooler. Since you're using an aftermarket cooler anyways you might as well save the 5 pounds. My audio setup is currently 2.0 stereo. The speakers I have aren't that good, and may get replaced eventually. However, they're good enough for me to be able to notice a difference when I plug them into my iPod instead of my PC (which has Dell's built in Realtek default system). If you're interested in the exact model, the sticker says kinyo ps-552, but the only informative mention of them on the internet is a 7 year old forum thread in which the OP went for an alternative.

I didn't mean how many channels. I meant setup. As in how is it set up? I'm guessing you run 3.5mm TRS output straight from the PC to the speakers?

Yup. It's possible, but unlikely I may get something different at some point, but not so likely.
Also, all AsRock boards are marked as pre-order, and scan claims to have been waiting for new stock since the 25th May (which wouldn't be much use as there were no compatible CPUs that early).

Well if you have the money to get a Z87 board from asrock do it. They have hdmi switching, "purity sound" (EMI shield, isolated circuits, high quality DAC, high quality audio codec, differential opamp, and a 600 ohm headphone amplifier), water/corrosion/dust proof coating, and a host of other useful features that they're introducing this next generation. I would buy one myself if I hadn't upgraded to ivy bridge just last year.

So you mean I have to wait for them to be restocked before I can get my new parts? Damn.

Or buy from the glorious American Empire and have them shipped overseas .

If I was going to wait for parts to be posted, I'd use Amazon. Their 3-5 day standard free delivery can be modelled with a Chi^2 distribution with mean 48 hours and standard deviation of 12 hours (I have to find some use for the stuff I was examined in this morning).
