Every graduate from a university has to undergo a 3 week youth camp training, after which the governments drafts your name to a random company where you work for 365 days for the sake of gaining 'working experience', afterwards you can do whatever you want with your life. The next batch is in June, but given the time of my exams, and with my thesis still going on, i'll probably get my shot in November.
The 1 year 'working experience' itself doesn't involve companies most of the time, the government is trying to adopt free education and what better way to make education free than to have poorly paid post graduates teach the kids, since i suck at teaching i'll try to escape that no matter what.

Here in France young people are no more forced to make their military obligations. Army was professionalized. There's just one day where young people are introduced to Army life and opportunities then they decide if they wanna engage or not.
In the past there was a military service. Several months "to serve your country". I personaly had to spend 10 months. Not the best thing I've ever done but not the worst either

Well, i also look forward to the day that ours is abolished also, alot of people who have been to camp always come back telling scary stories about it, mostly just to tease us or get us afraid, either way, it's worked on me.

Yeah I guess it's a kind of "tradition". Wherever you come from. It's often not as bad as what you can expect
