Game Discussion is divided into specific sections, so I'm thinking General Discussion would be best for it. Moving... now.

I could never really get excited about handheld games. To me they always took a backseat to the real game on other platforms and were never really as good graphically or in any other way.

Well I was born and raised on the NES, Genesis, and Game Boy, so both handhelds and consoles have held a special place in my gamer's heart. I remember wanting a Game Boy so bad after my cousins showed me theirs. Thing is, I'm an avid JRPG/SRPG player. The GBA, DS, and PSP were pretty heavy in this genre, and my library reflects that. Of course consoles have their fair share as well, but the 7th generation hasn't nearly been as impressive for me as the 6th or 5th (my God, the Playstation...) It's gotten better towards the end with Pandora's Tower, The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Tales of Xillia (which is taking its sweet time coming state-side), but in that time, I've found a lot of portable games to fill the void.
It's getting to the point where handhelds can moderately rival the previous generation of consoles in terms of graphical capability (I think, not really sure aside from just eyeballing it, haven't matched up the systems spec-for-spec). The 3DS looks like it could match the Wii in some games (if you shrunk the Wii's resolution of course), the PSP was probably on par with the PS2, and the Vita is just below the PS3 (dunno about that one? :p) and that excites me to no end. I remember playing my GBC and wondering how awesome it'd be if they ever made a handheld that could match the N64. We're past that stage and I'm still ready to see what comes next. But in the end, handheld, console, does it make a difference? In the future, you'll probably be able to play it all on your PC via emulators with enhancements as well. Speaking of consoles, I still haven't bought a Wii U. There just isn't a game to compel me (and I really want there to be one). I was going to get it for MH3, but I'm going to buy the 3DS version since it doesn't require a new console, and my 3DS has been neglected (in favor of nothing actually, I just haven't been playing much of anything at all recently). I'll probably get it when a few more games come out. 02-16-2013, 07:00 AM

If anyone wonders why I'm not answering back on Steam chat it's because:
A. Been feeling like shit the past few days. B. New games to play. C. Have company over. |
