Probably because you don't know how to spot the difference. Look at large textures from an obtuse camera angle and compare distant areas of the texture to nearby areas. The distant areas should appear blurry in comparison to the closer areas with AF off but with AF on both should appear equally sharp. It's less noticeable in "smooth" (I have no idea what the proper word is, somebody who knows something about art help me out) textures such as in WW though.
