Quote:I'll tell you what, it's nice to have the laptop running and not having to worry about the power going out while you're doing something. Not to mention I can still run the thing for 4 hours until the power comes back on. Come back with a UPS that can run it for 4 days then we'll talk. Quote:Laptops are really only nice for their portability. Anything else, desktop. Portability matters a lot in today's world though, whether it be going between classes for school or going to and from the office and home for work. Business trips and general mobility throughout the house may also be important. I find that this is actually less of an issue now that: -computers are everywhere (I work on a computer and there are computer labs in nearly every building on my college campus so anywhere that I would bring a laptop I already have a desktop, thus defeating the point) -we have smartphones for mobile computing that we bring with us everywhere -cloud computing allows you to take everything with you everywhere Quote:I use my laptop for programming I've tried to do this but at the end of the day it just takes too long to get stuff done on my laptops vs. my desktop. The lack of big high resolution monitors, multi-monitor, and proper full sized mechanical keyboard + a proper mouse makes it horribly unproductive. You could plug that stuff into a laptop but then the laptop would basically just be a desktop in disguise. I've been forced to use my laptops this last month since both of my desktops are now broken and it has been a horrible experience for me. Even though the i5m processor in my main laptop is just as fast as my desktop cpu was it still takes longer to get things done on my laptop for the reasons listed above.

How good certain resolutions look has a lot to do with eyesight and distance. I have horrible eyes and sit rather far away from my TV so I can't tell the difference between 2x and 4x. When I sit closer though, I definitely want full 4x IR or at least 3x.

I find myself using my laptop far less now that I'm out of school and working (I bought it specifically for school though). My sister uses her laptop for just about everything though. My iPod is for Internet browsing (on it right now) ever since our home wifi network started working properly last year. The battery life on my laptop has been shot to hell; it was all of that experimentation with Dolphin that did it. Currently, I just use it for writing, since I like typing while in bed.

I have a feeling the heat from your laptop being on your bed doesn't help it's battery out

After I graduated last year (and subsequently messed around with Dolphin), my battery was useless, basically. This was long before I started putting it on my bed. I don't use the battery at all anymore; I just plug my laptop in and do stuff with it. The fan seems to come on less often without the battery, always a plus.

As much as I generally despise laptops I will admit I prefer browsing with one at night from the comfort of my bed if I'm not doing anything important (which I'm usually not at these hours).

The battery life of my Macbook Pro Retina is despite Retina Display very good, over 8 hours and more That's enough for a day.

i7 860 beats it in single threaded performance i7 2600k is on par with it in multi-threaded performance Some people said E8400 still be able to beat it in single threaded benchmark but i'm not really sure ...So please feel free to correct me Laptop: Youtube Channel (Vintage Tech/Watches) :: |
