Stay out of trouble, and I (and the rest of Forum Staff) won't have to. Get in trouble then...

I thought I could make a quick $ selling weed on Steam. Humble Bundle was brought the set to a "reasonable" ~$2. Its a common emoticon I so figured I'm bound to get at least 1 out of 5, but just got worthless gold coins and a rare pirate emoticon that's only worth 60¢. Now I have to resist the urge to double down (must get my $ back!).

I envy the ability of some people here to stay out of arguments. I just had a guy tell me that imgur has an anti-altvoting system based around the MAC address of the device and using another computer would work, while using a proxy would not.
Firstly, this is bullshit because MAC is a networking interface, not an internet protocol. The only time the MAC address of your computer is broadcasted is to a router, to connect to it. On top of that, separate networking devices/adapters have separate MAC addresses, so, even if his theory were true, you wouldn't have to use a different computer. You'd have to use a different networking adapter. Most computers have an ethernet-based adapter and a wifi-based adapter, so it's not an instance of having extra computer parts or anything like that. Even more on top of that, the computer's MAC address is generally not given out on the internet. If anything, the router's MAC might be given out, but the MAC of the router, and even the networking adapters of the computer, can easily change, so it's not reliable. AND you'd be denying everyone connected to a network the ability to vote freely. Secondly, this is bullshit because imgur doesn't have any system in place to stop alt-voting. This guy ran into an error trying to vote the second time and automatically assumed that his vote was stopped. And then, when I told him to tell me where he got the bullshit about MAC addresses, he went and downvoted all of my comments, twice, and just shut up. Sounds childish? Well, the rest of imgur will likely see that I've been downvoted and assume that I'm the one bullshitting, and downvote me into oblivion, and give him upvotes. Because that's how imgur works. If the person you're arguing has a lower score than you, you must be right.

Vote-based sites like reddit and imgur do tend to be bad places to go if you're right but what you say isn't common knowledge. I've had a couple of instances of necro-downvotes from people I've disagreed with, and quite a few more of being downvoted because people wouldn't believe I was right. It's usually things about legal ways to use Dolphin or Intel being way better for Dolphin than AMD, especially as these things don't seem sensible to people deluded enough to think the world is fair.
But why are you commenting on imgur in the first place? It's designed to be wrapped in reddit or other sites. The comments are only there for the few who don't realise it's not supposed to be a standalone system.

I comment on imgur partly because it serves as a challenge to writing less confusing sentences, as I have to fit more information into a smaller amount of characters, but mostly because I accidentally got addicted to browsing it while using it to upload images. I do mainly use reddit, though.

Well then I guess I should check out one of those non-vote based sites for discussion like 4chan or neogaf.......oh......OH NO.....OH GOD NO... Seriously though it has little to do with the voting system and everything to do with the popularity of the site. The more people are part of the community the greater the percentage of posters that are trolls or shit posters. I have noticed this is a near universal pattern on the internet. As the site grows and more shit posters start coming in due to its spreading influence and popularity in other communities the good users stop posting because their are too many shit posters to handle now and they don't want to deal with it anymore. A voting system actually helps protect the veteran users from this but like every voting system anywhere it is susceptible to abuse. The only real viable solution is to never post/comment anywhere. Just glance at the comments, become immediately enraged by how stupid people can be, and close the tab. Spoiler:
