No need to diss RPM distros. Ubunutu is one of the distros to be used by newcomers who are not familiar with Un*x. GenToo is definitely a pro distro. It's nothing for newcomers only for people really knowing what they are doing. I'm using it as server and desktop but I can do so only since I'm a pro when it comes to Un*x. For somebody coming from Windows pick one of the newcomer distros like Ubuntu, Mandriva and company. There are a couple to choose from and they are usually rather similar. Just choose KDE and not Gnome ( as Ubunutu wants it to do ) if you like to keep your sanity.
1. Want something different from Windows What do you want to do with the system? Play games? Go back to Windows. Edit Movies and Photos? Go back to Windows. > Incorrect. You can play games on Linux but obviously only some. Not the problem of Linux but of game devers not getting how large the Linux market actually would be if they tapped into it. What goes for Image/Photo editing Linux is well suited, no need to run up the walls because of Windows. Movies is getting there but that's really an area still requiring some work ( no idea why this is still driving up against a wall in Linux land... must be lobbyists blocking it ). Games can be played with Wine but if you insist on playing games either play games which have Linux clients or ports ( LGP ) or else dual-boot with Windows. As a game-dev I do this setup so there's no problem to it. 2. There are almost no viruses for it There are no viruses yes, but there is more potential to have your entire system crumble with one command. > Not true unless you run commands as superuser. The same holds true for windows just with the difference that Windows takes also away from you the job of killing itself so you don't have to do it on your own. Most newcomers won't end up in superuser mode anyways since modern distros tell you exactly when you get into dangerous mode ( typically fat red rectangles around GUI blocks ). User mode settings usually can not mess up yourself too much... at last not any bit more than it is possible under Windows. 3. You have a lot of control over the system See #2. > See #2 4. I need to be familiar with Unix for college Buy the book Operating Systems Design and Implementation by Andrew S Tanenbaum. Learn his distro Minix (Case and point: this is exactly how Linus Torvalds did it.) > Books won't teach you the actual use of systems. Un*x is learned by using it not reading about it. Furthermore modern Linux distros are oriented on user friendly usage so you don't need to wade through manuals like in early days to figure out what's going on. I installed Ubunutu machines for co-workers having no Linux knowledge and they had no problem getting used to the Linux system without ever reading a book. 5. I want to run a stable server with a Linux distribution All server editions are stable. You need to decide whether you want a desktop or server edition. You stated earlier you want "something different from windows", well guess what!?! Windows is desktop oriented. > Not much to say there. Linux rules the server land and has a ever growing stronger foothold on desktop. 6. It's free and customizable! They all are. (Except for Redhat Linux, but that s*** is stupid, CentOS is the same thing.) > Yeah, certain distros have a price tag attached to it but that's not a bad thing. You pay for the service in general and that's a totally legit and GPL conform way of handling it. 01-14-2010, 10:44 AM

Yeeeeah I feel retarded for creating this. I don't 'need' to switch and Windows is alright I guess. Although I will occasionally use Ubuntu for experimenting. Like going to viruses.com and see every single virus fail at infecting my PC (just kidding). I like both a lot and soon I'll try to turn an aging PC into a good server. Also I just noticed we have CompTIA Linux+ books. >.<

So if i happened to install a distro in a virtual machine, then browse the web from there, my windows host wouldn't have any viruses problems, wouldn't it?
Also, is it possible to configure any distro as a firewall + network manager with DHCP server? I know there are some distros that work like that, even in virtual machines, but don't know if all of them have that functionality and i was planning to get rid of an ancient router. Just asking since i'm on a windows box without antiviruses or firewalls.

Jesus, Wine runs any decent windows programs / games.
Don't be a pussy with VMWARE. Get slackware, If your lucky you won't have to use lynx to get your display driver. After that you should be home free. You might want to try opensuse or ubuntu because they have a nice program managers. Still just know basic commands. Also, don't get books. I feel a bit bad because I'm using windows 7 for fast dolphin right now but, What you gonna do? 01-24-2010, 11:28 AM
I must admit that I love both them, Linux & Windows.
I think they make computer user more chance to select. When I start to learn I have chance to choose, I must learn Windows because my school teach it. When I graduated I start to teach myself Linux. I love Linux because of its freedom. I love Windows because its beautiful & convenient GUI. 01-24-2010, 01:28 PM
