The difference between 4x and 9x SSAA isn't that great, though there is a small noticeable difference in graphics quality. However, I'd rather keep the smoothness consistent, so I'm going with 4xSSAA.

That's because even at 2x IR + 4xSSAA your internal resolution is already exceeding your screen resolution. Therefore any further increase is unlikely to significantly reduce aliasing.

Depends on your screen resolution. For me there is a significant difference between 1x IR, 2x IR (or 1x IR + 4xSSAA), 3x IR, and 4xIR.

Yeah, try it on a 1920 x 1200 monitor. I promise you you will see the difference.
