It's inevitable on older builds; aside from being really lucky. One of the reasons we recommend latest builds for Wind Waker and other popular games is because of the potential for crashing. Is it possible to never get one? Sure; but it tends to happen when you least expect it. The faster your computer, the less likely it will be to crash though.

SweetFX will not slow down your game, but, since it takes from the framebuffer after the frame is already finished, it causes lag between when the frame is sent and when it appears, which can make a game feel sluggish. Not easily noticeable when using analog sticks, but definitely noticeable with a wiimote, buttons, the dpad, or a mouse.

I'm trying to get Wind Waker to work on my pc, preferably as HD as possible using a 12 year old game. I'm running:
Windows 7 pro 64 bit AMD FX-8350 4.3Ghz on an MSI motherboard 8gb G.Skill DDR3 1600 EVGA Nvidia GeForce GTX 770 Dolphin 4.0.2 I tried getting it work on my laptop running an i5 2.something ghz, 8gb ram, and intel HD 4000...but it wouldn't go. On this PC I've tweaked it a bit more than I tried on my laptop, and so far I've gotten it to run _somewhat_ smoothly at the lowest settings visually (still skips frames, but fps stays around ~30), but the music doesn't work. I would really, really like to play it at 1080p like you see on the right in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoADaQMdgEU (minus the objects disappearing as they near the edge of the screen, if possible). I really, really appreciate all the help anyone is able to offer. If there were a guide available that would be ideal, but I recognize that ofttimes coding like such as is present in emulators is extremely system-setup dependent. Thanks, Giftig Ed4: TL: DR After much testing, I now have it running at 1080p with almost no hitches. It's still not perfect...I definitely think it could use a little more fog in the distance on certain occasions, but holy crap this game is gorgeous. Ed: I figured out why the music didn't work, item hang was enabled. I disabled that. Music works now, but it goes about 6x faster than it should, and it sounds like it's coming through a pair of speakers with a short in them. After an hour of tweaking the only change I've encountered is one that slows the game down to ~10fps with HLE enabled. LLE sets it at ~30fps with the 6x audio. Ed2: I've reduced all the settings and unchecked everything in properties as far as I can, then re-enabled dual core support. Now I've got it running at ~30fps and the audio sounds about where it should be, but it still glitches for a second and then plays quick to catch up to where it was. Any ideas on how to stabilize it? ---the game itself runs choppy at best. Mostly it's around 30 fps, but it still has somewhat regular micro-pauses that really throw me off. Ed3: Hmm I may have discovered why...I run a Minecraft server on my pc and I think it may have been responsible for the slowdowns. Testing further. 05-13-2014, 06:31 PM
There are AR codes to get widescreen without issues; you can probably find them in this thread somewhere.
HLE audio is now enabled on latest builds; try using the development builds for better performance in Wind Waker. 05-14-2014, 03:41 AM
Yes, they are in this thread. On the first page. Because the OP is just the wiki page.

I've encountered a problem I can't seem to figure out. On dragon roost island, parts of the dungeon and in the small area right before the dungeon with the spring covered by a large boulder, I experience massive black squares that fly past the front of my camera (behind link), making this almost impossible to play. Any idea how to fix this?

Try a recent dev version, see if the problem persists.

Gonna see if I can get it to run smooth...starting at ground zero again. Ed: reduced settings to as low as I can make them and it still only gets ~15 fps. Sigh. 05-14-2014, 08:02 AM
If you're okay with not being able to do pictobox quests, and certain effects being wrong, you can go into the gameini and remove the last two sets of settings. Then you can enable fast depth calculation and EFB to Texture. I only say this because I haven't personally noticed the negative effects of EFB to Texture in this game, and don't need to use the pictobox (which hangs the game on use with fast depth calculation).

EFB2Ram is needed for the pictobox, EFB2Texture will work for everything else.
