If you disabled or lowered the AA and you're getting higher fps, it means your GPU isn't good enough to maintain full speed with AA enabled.

Another question: I thought OpenGL was supposed to run the slowest of the 3? Yet for me today when I was playing Luigi's mansion, Kirby's Epic Yarn and Super Mario Galaxy it seems to run smoother, with higher AA? Or am I missing something specific about those games.

And regarding AA, if I buy a better card then, I can max out the AA? I was considering maybe getting a better card in January.

The OpenGL and d3d11 backends use MSAA instead of SSAA. MSAA is a lot less demanding than SSAA. And yes buying a better graphics card would allow you to max out AA (well MSAA anyways).

Aha, so if I use Open GL i'll be able to run it with higher AA with less of a performance hit? Cool. Thanks for the help.

Yes but if you run without AA d3d9 will be A LOT faster.
