overclocking is save!
(but only if you really know what the f*ck you are doing) 09-05-2010, 04:08 AM
Hehe.... I <3 overclocking.
Guide to OC an i7 on an Asus mobo: Boot bios -> scroll down to BCLK -> on a 920/930, set to 200 -> scroll down to CPU feature -> Dissable Speedstep/turbo -> go back -> scroll to vcore -> set to 1.35. Will work on 99.99% of Core i7 chips to get them to 4ghz as long as you have proper cooling.
Back from the grave and working on textures.
HWMonitor says my CPU cores are both 65c when I load them 100% with LinX, and they're not overclocked... this bad?

Ah OK. The guide only mentions acceptable idle-temperature... is it so that the load temperature is OK as long as the idle temp is? I'm asking since I'm not sure what's "proper cooling..." My PC came with 4 fans at 1800 RPM, that seems pretty great to me, but is it? Idle temp is 41-43c

Idle around 40c isn't too bad. You probably have stock cooling that and in the world of ocing thats not proper. A aftermarket cooler is preferred when ocing. 75c+ start watching your temps. 80c+ start finding ways to bring that down.

I'm so happy someone made this thread. I apologize for slamming down all of this information at once, but I'm definitely not leaving any information out, so here are my stats of my PC after doing all of the tests from those 3 programs that you listed: (Warning: this is a very large screen shot)
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/4020/...ocking.jpg I have Windows 7 64x. And yes, I did mismatch two 4GB (2x2GB) sets of ram, and I thought that their mhz was supposed to be higher, but, for some odd reason, they set themselves at 1033, so fixing that if at all possible would be nice as well. I tried changing my multiplier from 17 to 20 like this one website showed (like an idiot), and it was even for my very processor, but that led to me having to mess around with my computer for several hours before I could even get it to boot into Windows again. I'm kinda scared to try overclocking again, but I really would like to do it. I really don't want to have to buy a Wii because I have friends over, and we all want to play Wii. Having the Wii not lag is very important to me with 4 players, so what should I start off doing first? EDIT: Ok, so I got my processor slightly overclocked, and I went from 3.4Ghz to 3.6Ghz by increasing the multiplier to 18 on my 965 Phenom II x4, and it's stable and everything. I tried going to 18.5, but my PC wouldn't load past the "windows loading" screen with the glowing windows logo in the middle. I'm guessing I need to increase the voltage since I haven't done that yet, but my BIOS menu doesn't allow me to do it because it's grayed out. What should I do so that I may increase my voltage for my CPU? Or should I do something else to achieve a better overclock? DOUBLE EDIT: Ok, so I have the voltage going up as well. I'll let you guys know if I need anything else, I suppose. haha 09-05-2010, 12:21 PM

unless you are on a chilled loop i call bs unless you have pic with prime or linx.
