Improving accuracy usually results in worse performance but there are cases where properly knowing how to emulate a function can make it possible to heavily optimize the function or process it with different hardware (like a video card instead of the CPU for example) to achieve a performance increase. Bounding Box emulation is an interesting example of drastic performance improvements once it was figured out how it actually works (discussed in previous articles).
