Mainstream is now the low costing 4870 or 260 GTX and perhaps 275 GTX. High end is 4890 or 280 GTX, 285 GTX, 295 GTX or 4870x2. If one was to buy something in between, it would be as simple as swapping out the E8400 for a Q9550. I have owned many a system (hence my signature and its hilarity factor) and can say with great certainty that no Phenom II is faster with Dolphin than an E8400. Even if you OC them both, the E8400 has an average of hitting 4GHz (or more) while the 955 hardly ever hits the same mark, even with more exotic cooling. Buying an AMD system at this level or higher is a downgrade. (07-26-2009, 03:39 AM)Klotzek Wrote: I doubt ghz really matters in dolphin. A i7 920 only has 2,6ghz but will beat the sh*t out of a q6600 with 3,6ghz. Sadly, it does not. I have mine OC'ed to 4GHz (4.2 with turbo enabled) and at stock it was not out performing my OC'ed E8400 at 4GHz. Dolphin much like PCSX2 requires a higher clock speed and it tends to love larger caches. 07-26-2009, 07:10 AM

You are in luck I was thinking about making an edit to my original post an include possible cooling solutions.
My first pick (and my new favorite Heatsink) would be the Cogage TRUE Spirit from Thermalright. MSRP is about $40 USD and performs almost the same as the Ultra 120 eXtreme. You may need to buy a socket 775 clip for this to work. My next pick would be my old favorite; Thermalright's Ultra 120 eXtreme. MSRP is about $60 USD and is currently considered the very best air cooling solution available. Keep in mind that this unit might block some RAM slots or possibly have other clearance issues due to its size. My last pick (and what I might go for on my i7) would be the H50 from CORSAIR. MSRP is about $70 USD and is reported to be better than the TRUE 120. These are my personal picks. I used to have cherry picked water cooling parts but ended up with air because of the maintenance involved. It is just not my cup of tea anymore. All these units are simple to install and require almost no upkeep. 07-26-2009, 08:05 AM

Core 2 Duo E6600(conroe) overclocked. also tried 2,3ghz penryn, but its much worse and i tried with 2500mhz athlon x2 -> crap also dolphin scales perfectly with more clock. i get 30% more performance with overclocked E6600 instead of stock clock 2,4ghz. conclusion : 3 different systems in 4 different settings tested and all behave exactly as i thought in terms of cpu clock scaling. when i speak of fullspeed, that does not mean in certain situations or places, it means >95% of the game. everything else may be playable but is not anything near perfect. |
