You should read these two threads below for more information on setting up the emulator. There is also a few tips about speed issues you might encounter eventually but, at most cases your speed will depend on what each game domains, there are some games that uses more GPU e.g. The New Super Mario bros, Paper Mario while on the other hand some needs more CPU power, Super Smash Bros. Melee/ Brawl, Zelda Twilight Princess it really varys. I'm using Windows 7, which it may requires a bit more system RAM, something like 4 gigs or so, Windows XP with the dx9 plugin will work much better in some cases afaik, But I have got over 60+ fps and most games in Windows 7 with no problems, except in Zelda TP my fps drops to 18/20 ish.
