Dolphin vs. real wii performance? - caveman - 03-02-2010

This might sound like a very weird question/topic… however…Rolleyes

At the moment I’m using 720P and I’m getting about 25-30FPS (depending on the action) in Mario Karts. Even at 30FPS you might notice a little/small sporadic slow downs (more likely my CPU being a bottleneck), regardless the game is totally playable. I was just wondering if this game on original Wii in 480P is as smooth as ‘butter’ or you might get some occasional frame drops on Wii system too.

At the end I’m wondering if I my hw wasn’t an issues, if Dolphin can emulate Wii @ 480P (trying to compare apples to apples) close to a perfection?

I believe some Wii games are 30FPS designed, so they should in theory look the same on Wii hardware. I’m not a big gamer person, but from what I understand you need at least 30FPS for the game to be playable, and 60FPS to have a nice smooth game experience. I remember friend of my was complaining about some of his PS3 games being only 30FPS.

Dolphin is able to run many Wii and GameCube games with almost full emulation with a few minor errors.

Whether higher resolutions give you slowdowns depends on your graphic card. Most wii games doesn't have frameskip internally, meaning they will run slower if they can't get the FPS they're designed for (Some are 60 and some are 30, or 50/25 for PAL 50 Hz mode)

What I find remarkable is that a spambot actually posted something totally true, relevant, and unsuspicious.

And then there's a signature with spamlinks to baby coupons.

Thank you profesor !!!!!!!!!!!!! Big Grin
Thanks guys for your replies. I guess there are few factors involved and it is almost imposible to compare apples to apples. There is playing resolution, GPU, CPU, game design and emulator settings. I was just wondering because even at 30FPS when playing Mario Karts, I can see the action is not 100% smooth. It might be just 30FPS on 60Hz display effect. Also I'm playing my games on 110" screen using 720P DLP projector, which might add to it.

it's completely possible to raise the resolution
