play games from NAS - asheenlevrai - 01-24-2022 Hi ![]() I just installed Dolphin and gave it a try. My game drops are stored on my home NAS (Synology) connected to my PC via GbE. I briefly tried playing a couple games in Dolphin without copying them on the local disk and I get decent results. Loading the next scene/level may occasionally take a coupe seconds longer than expected but nothing too dramatic. Now, graphics could be optimized I guess and I plan to tinker with graphics settings in Dolphin to improve that. However, do you think that the fact that my games are located on a network drive could cause any decrease in quality graphics-wise? Or are these not related? Thanks -a- RE: play games from NAS - JosJuice - 01-24-2022 (01-24-2022, 07:11 AM)asheenlevrai Wrote: However, do you think that the fact that my games are located on a network drive could cause any decrease in quality graphics-wise? RE: play games from NAS - Bowi - 01-26-2022 That being said... Do you think a NAS over wired network is a sustainable / good enough way to play our games? I did not compress my ISOs with the Dolphin format, FYI. RE: play games from NAS - JosJuice - 01-26-2022 Yes, that's generally fine. But avoid doing it over Wi-Fi. RE: play games from NAS - JMC47 - 01-26-2022 I do this. There are exceptions where you will run into loading time issues if a lot of small files are loaded at once, but for the most part it's fine. Wi-Fi doesn't work though. RE: play games from NAS - chrisis123 - 01-26-2022 (01-26-2022, 04:07 AM)JMC47 Wrote: I do this. I have my Dolphin games on a makeshift NAS on a HDD with a Raspberry Pi (Open Mediavault) and SMB sharing, connected to the router via lan cable, and 5Ghz WiFi on the client actually does work fine for me. (My main PC is connected to my router via LAN but I occasionally use Dolphin on my M1 Mac Book Pro connected via 5Ghz WiFi and apart from very occasional stutters that might be the result of the wireless connection it's not too bad). Probably would be troublesome with 2.4Ghz WiFi though, never tried that. RE: play games from NAS - Bowi - 01-26-2022 Thanks a lot, everyone!
RE: play games from NAS - Kolano - 01-26-2022 You generally shouldn't see NAS related performance issues, a 1gb network is faster than the disc drives in the GC / Wii. If you have any spare bays, adding a SSD to the NAS for caching may help smooth over any hiccups you may see.
