I don't really have many titles to compare but from what I've seen stuff they runs perfectly smooth using Direct 3D 11 or OpenGL on the stable build at a constant 60fps just absolutely eats it in the dev builds? If you run them in vulkan it goes right back to being smooth but in the other backends where a MUCH older build is buttery smooth they go from constant 60 FPS to 35-40?

I would think years of improvements would make things more stable/better performance, not less. Was there something massively changed with them over the years or did something new just break them and was never fixed?

Your CPU, and Windows 7. You´re welcome.

Now, to elaborate: pre-Ryzen AMD processors simply sucked, they suffered from having low IPC compared to Intel's. You needed to have them on ridiculously high frequencies so that they could match their Intel counterparts regarding Dolphin performance.

Then you have Windows 7 which is 1) no longer supported by Microsoft and 2) does not support the latest D3D features which are included in 8.1 and newer.

While it's true that Dolphin has improved a lot, those improvements sometimes come with a cost (and that cost being Dolphin being slightly more difficult to run on aging hardware).

So it simply comes down to compatibility.  Not on the latest software? Sucks to be you. Good to know. If windows 10 wasn't so damn bad I'd use it but quite frankly, it's a OS that was made for tablets and phones that was ported over when their phone division went bust to try and save a buck. Well at least vulkan works like a dream.

Windows 10 is as good as Windows 7 if you know how to customize it (not even talking about registry edits). If you know your way around an OS enough to complain about Windows 10's issues, you should know how to customize it to suit your advanced user needs.

Windows 7 hasn't received security patches since January. There's no choice here.
Windows 10 has received criticism since its launch, and rightfully so, but it's been 5 years now. Water under the bridge, and 9 major updates.
You can still upgrade for free from Windows 7, or get a key for less than 20$.
