Contollers not working in-game in Dolphin 5.0 - coniferbrown - 10-03-2018

I know this is a fairly common topic/problem but I have read through a number of threads and not been able to fix my problem. I am using Dolphin 5.0 on Linux Mint and cannot get either of the two types of controllers I have to work in-game. I have a Mekala (the brand) USB "gamecube" controller as well as an INNEXT N64 type controller that I have tried in a number of different games. The controllers are detected by Dolphin and I can configure them in the controller config, but as soon as I enter any emulation, the game does not respond to the controller at all. I would really appreciate any tips or direction on how to figure out this issue, even if it means I have to buy a different controller or whatever. I included a screenshot of the controller config window for the gamecube type controller, though I am not sure that will be very helpful
Thanks!
