Whoops, I posted the link http://wiibrew.org/wiki/DOL before reading it to be clear what I was referring to.
“The name presumably refers to "Dolphin", which was the GameCube's codename.”
I guess that answers it.

The CPU in the gamecube is code-name/nickname "Flipper"
You'll also see alot of references to dolphins in wii and gamecube titles for this reason.
