old version that uses windows installer works way better than anything recent - ussforbes - 09-23-2018

hello, I am using revision:

ac267a29405ae768037a8774b84b805a4180d1af

part of the 5.0 spectrum

simply because it runs smooth on all computers I have ever tried it on.  I really want the updated features such as fixes for the saving glitches.

I am using:

ASUS Prime x470 pro motherboard

AMD Ryzen 7 2700x

EVGA GeForce 1080ti

2x 8gb 3733mhz 17cas patriot viper ram in slots a1 and b1

2x 500gb Samsung 970 EVO NVMe M.2 V-NAND SSDs

old version works amazing, even on my surface pro!  but anything I can download on the site now doesn't run that way even on the system I just built.  although this old version runs flawlessly but has some saving issues.

this version uses a windows installer unlike the ones available now.  I don't know if that's why it runs faster?  no idea.  I just want to make it known that this older version runs flawlessly, glitch free and I hope you can bring back that same playability  Smile

Playability has actually gotten better in the latest dev builds (save for a few bugs hanging around). If you´re having slowdowns with that setup something must be fucked up in your PC and you haven´t noticed, or you´re probably trying to use settings at insane levels.

I have it at 1920x1080 full antialiasing and anisotropic all the way up with scaled efb copy and fogging on.  flawless on all 3 computers I got.  flawless on other people's computers I put it on.

but updated versions stutter at least once a second and huge stutters occasionally.

There it is.

I also wrote that it works flawlessly with those "insane" settings in the old version.  on multiple PCs.  not just mine.

the logical fallacy you are using to look like you are acknowledging the topic at hand is not getting anyone anywhere.

this topic at hand is :

old version runs flawlessly
new version doesn't.

I understand you will respond with more comments about "fucked up" computers and avoid the actual topic.

but I am ok with that.

(edited due to honesty that no one would like)

just putting info on the table that you guys could possibly use.

When the old version runs great on many computers but the new one with all graphics down to bare bones minimum still stutters, turning it around on my computer has no relevance when the old one worked better on multiple computers home built and factory built.

anyway, thank you for a great emulator. I will just stick with the old one.

We didn't merge anything in from 5.0 stable that would have caused what they're describing.

They just have a messed up way to set up Dolphin / systems. just ignore it

And, when accuracy comes, sometimes Dolphin might get demanding (which btw it is on CPU side). I remember reading somewhere that the focus was shifting to the GPU side of things though, which could explain why you´re suffering stutters with your 1080Ti when using latest dev builds and high AA.

Sure enough, no one is stopping you from using 5.0 stable as it is supported (despite being a couple of years old at this point). But you will certainly be on your own if you get across issues already fixed by latest dev builds and refuse to update.

EDIT: In case you did not notice, Helios is an actual Dolphin dev.
I understand dolphin, for reasons the developers cannot change, will never make use of all cores and clock speed has more bearing on the outcome.

the old version I was referencing might be something worth taking a second look at.

I know developers are constantly making updates.

but an outside perspective (despite often lacking insider knowledge) is unlikely have the tunnel vision associated with programming.  no attempt to talk down to anyone was intended.

again, i am thankful that the developers produced the best emulator out there and I hope this info is useful to them somehow.

Smile

I was just hoping something in that old version might be worth referring back to that might allow the newer versions to keep up with it.

comparing new code to old code that hasn't been looked at in a while is always a pain.

and I am not expecting people who produce free software to just do it at my request.

I was just hoping it would be a good point to look back at and possibly speed up the newer versions.

Do you have Gecko codes enabled? There's a known issue with Gecko codes causing stuttering, but I don't know if it's as bad as what you're describing
