if they're normal, in game memory card saves, then they'll transfer between versions without issue.
If they're savestates, they will not transfer and there is nothing you can do about that.

I went from 5.0-8512 to 8715 and the savestates worked for me

sometimes savestates will transfer okay, but we often will increment the versioning due to incompatible changes to core so you really, really should not rely on that being the case.
It's easier to just tell users that they don't transfer so that they don't get the wrong idea and then are stuck with savestates they can't load.
