Basically I got a couple N64 games that I tried to open but they were either .n64 or .v64 files and Dolphin could not open them. So unless I have done something wrong on my part, you cannot play Nintendo 64 games.

Except if it works in a different way, and that is:
"Dolphin" is basically just a Wii emulator and the Wii can emulate other consoles but I guess you need something extra (?)

Either way I tried to use a N64 game it could not run.

I literally made an account to leave this comment.

The Nintendo 64 games in the compatibility list refer to the Virtual Console releases of those games. A standard Nintendo 64 ROM won't run in Dolphin.

So yeah, exactly my point. Dolphin is basically a Wii emulator. So misleading.

The front page of dolphin-emu.org says that Dolphin is a GameCube and Wii emulator, and the games you're talking about have been released for the Wii. Even though the games essentially are the same as on Nintendo 64, they are Wii releases. I can see why it's confusing, but it's not incorrect, and I can't think of any way to make it clearer other than putting some kind of disclaimer on every Virtual Console game that's in the compatibility list.

It's not misleading in the slightest. Dolphin has always been touted as a Gamecube and Wii emulator. Virtual console support falls under Wii support.

There is a difference between a dump of a VC title which dolphin can run, and a dump of an n64 cartridge.
