RE: Nintendo Switch - MayImilae - 09-14-2018

Yay Animal Crossing! That double fake-out was really clever, if a little mean. >:3 But it's good to have Isabelle in Smash!

There was a lot of neat announcements! Yoshi's Craft World, tons of Final Fantasies including Crystal Chronicles, Luigi's Mansion 3, and teases on Splatoon updates! The biggest surprise for me, outside of Animal Crossing, was definitely Civ 6 and City Skylines. It will be very interesting to see how those games perform!

It wasn't their best ever direct, but it was good! Sure we didn't get details on already announced big games coming, but that's for the best, they are a while out and there isn't really anything to say about them other than they are working on it. I'm ok with them taking their time to make the games great! Especially Prime 4. PLEASE make that a good one!

RE: Nintendo Switch - Admentus - 09-14-2018

Uhh yeah... Cool presentation... But should I get worried Nintendo?

Luigi's Mansion 3 is definitely the highlight! And it couldn't be any more happier that the Luigi's Mansion 1 remake for the Nintendo 3DS is receiving a co-op mode. Nintendo, you better add co-op to Luigi's Mansion 3 as well... DO IT!

It is cool that New Super Mario Bros. U is coming to the Switch... But where is Super Mario 3D World? Super Mario Maker (or Super Mario Maker 2), Wind Waker HD? Twilight Princess HD? Dare I say... Ocarina of Time HD and Majora's Mask HD for the Switch... Or what about A Link Between Worlds with additional content for the Switch? Yoshi's Crafted World looks interesting, but that isn't going to win me over. I am not really into Animal Crossing, but it is great it is finally coming. I know at least one person who is going to be overjoyed with this. It is weird there was no mention of Fire Emblem or Metroid Prime, but as mentioned here around, Nintendo needs to take it easy with Fire Emblem, very easy.

I didn't really get the Splatoon 2 update trailer. Is it because I never played it before? The trailer is pure vague and doesn't incentive me at all to be interested in it even slightly.

Soooo many indies and... just... titles such as Cities Skylines, Civilization VI, Diablo... Come on... We already have PC for that and most titles have been there for years already. At least Nintendo if you're at it, announce A Hat in Time as well (it is happening by the way). I would like, ya know? Console exclusive titles? A reason to use the Switch? I couldn't care any less for Final Fantasy... I would rather want a new Golden Sun.

It is sad the Nintendo 3DS had the most interesting highlights being worthwhile this direct (Luigi Mansion's 1, Bowser's Inside Story, Kirby's Extra Epic Jarn)

Finally... The Nintendo online service seems like a massive disappointment? So, what exactly is any different from the free service there is now? I couldn't care any less for cloud saves, never relied on them myself. That's why native PC games and emulation provide me full access to maintain and backup my saves on multiple hard drives. Only NES games is another disappointment. So where are the SNES, N64, GC, GB, GBC, GBA, NDS titles? The majority of NES games are simply outdated by today's standard. It is mostly Zelda, Super Mario Bros, Kirby, Metroid and Mega Man (which also is on Steam these days) and perhaps a few more I did forget about which are worth reliving... Which I already have been doing for years... So why should I need them again in my library? Online co-op or versus seems a cool addition, but how would that work with for example Zelda 1? Is the game going to be revamped to support a two-player mode? Smash better has to live up to it's expections if Nintendo doesn't want their online service to fail.

About Smash, finally a non-anime (non-Fire Emblem) characters being added. I am cool with that. Isabella seems cute to include. Now if they continue ahead and still include Waluigi.

Everything else I did not mention was just meh.

Ok... My rant is finished... Back to work. Ranting and all such concluded, announcing Luigi's Mansion 3 was a great start for my day to begin with. Nintendo just didn't needed a Nintendo Direct to announce just that.

RE: Nintendo Switch - DrHouse64 - 09-14-2018

I personally enjoyed it more than the E3 direct. I'm curious about FF Crystal Chronicles, it sounds fun in multiplayer. I'm also looking forward Luigi's Mansion 3, Final Fantasy games I never had the chance to play, Mario Party and Animal Crossing.
Cities Skylines with low graphics and terrible FPS : why ? But Civ VI looks good and perfect for portable sessions.
It seems Sakurai loves to play with spectators hearts this year. But this time I saw it coming when Isabelle showed up eh eh.

Yeah, not the best direct but a neat one for sure.

It was always their intention to have the free service be the trial run of their online service before they made it paid. So yeah, litterally just the same thing, now you gotta pay for it, and because you're paying for it now, you get cloud saves and NES games

RE: Nintendo Switch - Admentus - 09-15-2018

Except that I don't need cloud saves (never did) and that it's only NES... Just NES... No titles which the Virtual Console had on the Wii, Wii U and 3DS... So... Why should I bother with a paid service? I don't expect Nintendo to suddenly provide a flawless online experience. Perhaps I am just spoiled with free online gaming on the PC and previous Nintendo systems. Not that Nintendo was even that great with online gaming to begin with. I guess it is just offline experiences such as Super Mario Odyssey that are going to matter for me. It's a shame that Balloon World is going to be put behind a paid service, from the sounds of hearing it Balloon World was a great addition.

The issue is not that the service should be paid for. That's fine. All things in life are to be paid for. It is just that as a paid service it can not live up to it's expectations. Everything has to be priced in moderation. I get Nintendo want to earn on players using / exploiting their online servers, but it does come down to that the is a hard competition in today's market. PC gaming does so for free and Xbox and PS with the paid service bring a lot to the table. I mean come on... Why do we even need to use a smartphone for voice chat, not even Microsoft and Sony do that.

The real question is, can Nintendo really keep up? I cared about Nintendo since their NES and for me it is all about delivering games that are being about playing games. In today's world games tend to get a little lost in obscure methods... Paywalls, handholding, microtransactions, daily/monthly events, lootboxes, fetch quests, wait timers, overly reusing content, not being able to get rid of outdated design (glares at Assassin's Creed's trailing missions), following the hype (ugh... Battle Royale), controversies (no politics my in games, thank you). Nintendo as one of the few larger companies left still manages to develop games that stay true to what a game is really supposed to be. And I value that the most. Breath of the Wild didn't happen to be my favorite game of all time by chance, Nintendo understood their own game and what made it so great. You can not come to any other conclusion than that the developers themselves really loved the game. The same they did before with Ocarina of Time. You should ask yourself, does Epic Games really love Fortnite because it is so amazing? Or simply because it brings a lot of money to the table *glares at Blizzard with angry eyes*.

But I am getting side-tracked here and I am probably acting all sour like usual. It is just that I care a lot for Nintendo and I have high hopes of them. Perhaps it is unrealistic. But Nintendo has proven several times to have made some of the best games ever made. The Nintendo 64 has to be my favorite console of all time, purely there was so many instant classics which still hold up in their gameplay perfectly today *hints at Nintendo*. I shouldn't forget about Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy either. So each time it feels like Nintendo misses a crucial chance, I tend to be quite harsh on them. Just because I expect a lot.

Ok... I'm done.

RE: Nintendo Switch - Invader - 09-15-2018

I hope now that Nintendo's charging for online play they actually implement online in more of their titles. There's no reason a game like New Super Mario Bros. U shouldn't have online play. Of course it's better enjoyed locally but that isn't always an option. They added online for Super Mario Party's minigames, but I'd like to see more done. I hope the extra cash flow will give them some incentive for that.

Also, is Retro Studios breathing? Their last game was 4 years ago...

TFW still waiting for smash: (Show Spoiler)

Maylmilae Wrote:Have you played the DS game? Camelot already followed up the amazing GBA Golden Sun games... just with a reeaally bad flop. I really love the series (I have all of them complete in box!) but ooph the DS entry is not great! I'm sure Camelot is scared to touch that franchise again!

I think DD gets treated unfairly among fans. It's not a bad game IMO, just not a great game. Having played almost 70+ JRPGs over the past 15 years, I have seen really bad games. Like if you played Lunar: Dragon Song or Lufia: The Ruins of Lore from start to finish, you'd have more fun ripping off your own fingernails. DD has a bunch of flaws, but for me it's not terrible. Terrible is something else. DD is just average in the grand scheme of things (slightly above average for me, somewhere just above an 8/10). It missed the mark on becoming a great hit like the other two GS games, but you can't always strike gold. Still an enjoyable game for many people I've talked to, and FWIW the 3D battles pushed what I thought the NDS could do. And you could even speed them up! Overworld 3D was meh, but better than a bunch of other DS games.

Although, commercially, yeah, it was an utter failure. Not even gonna lie, DD just didn't resonate with people, which may have been the biggest crime in many eyes. The numbers never backed up the game. Even so, it's ridiculous how Nintendo and Camelot refuse to update that IP and just left us with a cliff hanger. If you fail once, is it really worth quitting altogether? Plenty of other franchises have had their own "misses". I'd argue that despite nearly 14 million units sold, the Wii U itself was a miss, yet Nintendo came back punching with the Switch. I know GS will probably come back later, but I keep asking how much later? It's not like they can't fix what they messed up.

@Admentus - Everyone I talked to knew all of Nintendo's online stuff was going to suck, based on what info had been made known. Nintendo has never been seriously invested in making modern online services. It's just enough that you can hold Smash and Splatoon matches; everything else beyond basic multiplayer (and I mean basic) is like shooting in the dark with Nintendo. They used to be pretty innovative. Stellaview was a very impressive attempt at downloadable content, and the GB Mobile Adapter pushed what handhelds could do online. The 64DD also had lots of potential (but Nintendo never delivered on most of the good features they promised). After that, they basically abandoned all things online during Gen 6 and only reapproached it semi-seriously with Gen 7. But even then they were slow to adopt and adapt (two words: Friend Codes). Besides barebones multiplayer for stuff like Smash and Mario Kart, and their online store, they've just about missed every other mark. I log-on to PSN every now and then, and it's just worlds apart.

I think it really has to do with their corporate culture. It's just especially slow to change in terms of long-term strategy. Which is odd given that the game developers and engineers themselves are always making innovative things (e.g. Nintendo Labo came out of nowhere for me, 100% unexpected, but it was "classic" Nintendo ingenuity at work). It's also a case of Nintendo's corporate culture not really caring about customer criticism (especially western criticism, I gather).

RE: Nintendo Switch - MayImilae - 09-15-2018

Golden Sun Dark Dawn is definitely not the worst RPG ever. It's just... so... boooooring.

RE: Nintendo Switch - Shonumi - 09-15-2018

Not how I remember it. The dialog and plot are slow, but I enjoyed the battles and puzzles. Granted, both were definitely on the easy side, I found it nice all the same. Sometimes I don't really want a game that comes off as challenging, just want something to pick up and play without putting too much effort into making progress. I think DD at the time filled that need for me. I recall beating most of the game being stuck inside during a blizzard in 2011. Spent the whole day doing half the game.

Anyway, was talking about this with some other folks, but if they can't or don't want to make a 4th entry in Golden Sun, might as well do a remake of the first 3. I'd definitely buy an HD version on the Switch. It's the perfect chance to put Golden Sun and The Lost Age into a single package, as it was originally meant to be played. Ideally, they'd be very conservative when with those two games, but clean up a bunch of stuff with DD.

RE: Nintendo Switch - MayImilae - 09-16-2018

I think that might have been because of your situation. Tongue When I played through it a few months ago, it was really boring and difficult to go through. I mean, it takes like 40 hours of much too easy combat and puzzles before the game even reaches the plot, and then it ends on a cliffhanger for the unreleased sequel. It was very unsatisfying!
