GameCube Memory Card Issue - BigCoffinHunter - 12-09-2015

When I first started using Dolphin I played a bunch of Super Mario Sunshine and then moved on to Wii games. Recently I tried Code Veronica X and it said the memory card in slot A was corrupted. I launched Super Mario Sunshine and it said the same thing, except instead of corrupted it was "different market." The last time I played everything was fine, so I'm not sure what happened. As far as I know all the GameCube games I've launched are NTSC. Is there anything I can do to recover the save data?

Also, is there any documentation explaining how Dolphin handles save data and where it is located? Most emulators I've used created a seperate save files in the same folder as the games, but it appears Dolphin works differently. I'd like to understand how it works so I can backup the files. I'm pretty far into Skyward Sword and definitely don't want to lose my progress.

Thanks.

Skyward sword shouldn't have anything to do with GC memory cards.

Dolphin (sort of) emulates a Wii NAND's structure so the savegames are in the Wii directory. If you want to back it up, you can right click on the game (in the main window) then export the save game (so you can re-import it if something goes wrong).

I'm not sure what's wrong with your GC games though, so I'll leave that to someone else Wink

I meant that I want to understand how Dolphin saves games for both systems because now that I've put so much time into Skyward Sword I don't want to suddenly lose my save data like I did with Super Mario Sunshine. I assume no data is impervious to corruption, so whatever happened to my GameCube saves could also happen to my Wii saves. If I understand what Dolphin is doing in the background than I can at least back them up.

That's good to know. Can GameCube games be backed up the same way?

I figured it out. The My Documents folder containing my Dolphin save data somehow ended up in the My Pictures folder. Dolphin made a new folder called "documents" and created another GameCube memory card there. I assume that's the card the games saw as corrupted and wanted to format. When I moved the My Documents folder to its original location I could access my original save data again.

That's great to hear. Just FYI, you can back up the whole memory card just by copying the memory card file to another (safe) location.
