Better CPU or GPU? - linker357 - 11-20-2015

So christmas is coming up, and with my savings I've been debating whether I should buy a better CPU or GPU, my current CPU is an i5 4670k and GPU an Nvidia GTX 760. What do you think and what are your suggestions?

Depends on what you want to do, if your games run fine in Dolphin anyway then go ahead with the GPU, if you want your Dolphin games to run a bit faster, get a better CPU.

GPU

and get something like a R9 390x

Yes they run perfectly fine (100% speed all of the time) but I'm concerned about if my pc might hang a bit with later builds

The R9 390x goes a little bit out of my budget

I certainly wouldn't invest into a new CPU. If you're playing PC games and have trouble running games at your preferred settings then upgrade the GPU, if not, save up and wait until the next line-up arrives.

The GTX 760 is still a quite capable GPU, so I don't see a huge need to upgrade it. The most logical next step would be something like a GTX 970 (or a 390X) but even that shouldn't be a necessary upgrade if you game at 1080p. A new CPU is even more unnecessary if you already get 100% on Dolphin, which is also more demanding than any native pc game at the moment. If I were you, I'd wait until next April when nVidia most likely releases their new GPU line-up, and buy one of them.

I'd invest my next money in games instead ...

But for your questions, skylake are about 15% faster per clock than your haswell, but you already have one of the fastest one. Bigger GPUs allow you play at higher resolutions, so do you have a 4k monitor?

Nobody does know what will happen next, so maybe there is no need to buy newer hardware at all? Maybe you'll need a newer GPU generation for supporting the more accurate way, or whatever .... To be honest, I don't see such a change soon.

Just overclock if you encounter low fps with your current CPU. Your GPU is already fast enough for 4x and perhaps even 6x res. Save your money for something else.

Waste of money to buy new hardware when yours is perfectly capable, unless you plan to do 4k or you play other intense pc games.
