PowerVR any good? - Nintonito - 12-08-2014 We haven't really seen any ARM based SoC's running PowerVR 6 hardware, but would it matter? I'm sure with the existing devices out people have experience by now. I know they are vey fill rate heavy, which could be good for getting past 1xIR, but I also heard hey have a lot of quirks and other finicky issues. Could anyone with knowledge chime in? Doesn't seem to be much online about the 6 series on android. Doesn't seem to be much online about the 6 series on android. Looking here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PowerVR_products#Series_6 they are mostly in apple products and therefore not much going on with android devices up to now. RE: PowerVR any good? - tueidj - 12-08-2014 http://gfxbench.com/device.jsp?benchmark=gfx30&os=Android&api=gl&D=Allwinner+UltraOcta+A80&testgroup=overall RE: PowerVR any good? - Sonicadvance1 - 12-08-2014 There are quite a few Android Allwinner A80 devices on the market now for less than $200. The A80 has a quad Cortex-A15 usually running the frequency from 1.8Ghz to 2Ghz, with a lot to mid range PowerVR6 GPU. Due to IMGTec's bad reputation I really don't want to waste money on a PowerVR6 device. If their drivers don't instantly explode upon starting a game, they'll probably run quicker than the Mali drivers though. Speculating on the speed since I've had done some testing on a PowerVR5 device to determine its performance characteristics. The Nexus Player is also the first x86_64 device that we could potentially run on and has a PowerVR6 GPU in it. That requires some x86_64 JIT recompiler work to correctly run though. RE: PowerVR any good? - tueidj - 12-08-2014 What's stopping Dolphin from running on a Dell Venue 8? RE: PowerVR any good? - Sonicadvance1 - 12-08-2014 We don't support 32bit x86. So we require an Android 5.0 device with support for running x86_64 code. RE: PowerVR any good? - tueidj - 12-08-2014 Silly me, I thought "x86_64" as listed in the specifications would mean a 64-bit OS. Anyway I strongly doubt any atom based system will be able to run Dolphin at half decent speed regardless of the GPU, they're just terrible. RE: PowerVR any good? - Nintonito - 12-08-2014 That Allwinner benches pretty badly. Kinda what I figured. PowerVR at this point is a complete write off for android products. At this point powerVR basically equates to apple product. RE: PowerVR any good? - DatKid20 - 12-08-2014 Honestly the only android device that uses a powervr GPU that would be nice to see is the Nexus Player. |
