Mario Kart Framerate Issues - Matthijs - 08-18-2014

Heya,

I just installed dolphin v4.0.2 so i could run Mario Kart Wii off it. However I am having serious framerate issues even in the menus were it drops to 40-60% emulation speed.

This is the hardware i am running:

Core: i7 2680QM 2.2 GHz
Ram: 8GB
System: Windows 7 x64
Graphics Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M 3GB

Dolphin Settings
-*Config*-
Framelimit: 60
Enable Dual Core: Checked
Enable Idle Skipping: Checked
CPU Emulator Engine: JIT Recompiler

-*Display*-
Backend: Direct3D9
Aspect Ratio: Auto
VSync: Unchecked
Anti Aliasing: 4xSSAA
Anisotropic Filtering: 16x

Let me know if you need to know anything else.

Any ideas on what i can do?

*sorry if this is in the wrong forum :/

_Your CPU clock speed is too slow for MK to run at playable speed . Look at the laptop performance guide to tweak your CPU speed . 2.9GGHz is your max turbo speed on 2 cores
_Use Internal Resolution(IR) instead of anti-aliasing(AA) . GTX 560M is on par with GTX 650 . So you should use 3x IR , no AA , 16x AF. SSAA is very demanding : 2xIR(1280x1056) + 4xSSAA =2xIR x 2 = 4x IR (2560x2112) . So if the native resolution of your display is 720p , adding 4xSSAA will make it more demanding than 1080p
_Make sure your GPU is used , not integrated GPU . Then again , please look at the guide
P.S : MK run faster with Direct3D (new name) a.k.a Direct3D11 (old name) . Direct 3D9 is no longer available on latest Dolphin . And the Dolphin version which you're using is not latest Dolphin . Direct 3D9 used to be the best backend for most games back then . Still , MK and some other games like Mario sports mix perform better with Direct 3D11

Thanks for the quick response. Will try it out!

Thanks for the help. Has improved. I think the temperature of my laptop isnt helping as well. Running between 75 C and 83 C.

Set multiplier = 28 or 29 . Your CPU will run at 2.8 or 2.9GHz
Your current clock speed that shows in that attachment is 2316.83MHz = 2.3GHz which is slow

This is the result when playing:

I dont know why this is the case. I am getting the feeling it is still getting overriden by some temperature controlling mechanism.

My laptop is an ASUS G74SX which i think has had problems with this.

Thank you for your help Smile

I force my CPU running at 2.0GHz when gaming but the temp is just around 55C
Your CPU is running at 1.7GHz but you still get 83C . 99.9% chance you will hit 90->100C if your CPU run at max speed
Your laptop seems to be overheating . However , it's a gaming laptop which can handle the heat well as long as the thermal compound is still alive . I think your thermal compound is dead . OEM thermal compound doesn't last long anyway , it will die within a year or 2 or maybe even sooner
Perhaps you should ask some technician to disassemble it and replace the cheap OEM thermal pound with aftermarket one such as IC diamond 7 carat or Arctic MX-4
I'm using aftermarket one btw . OEM thermal compound sucks
