Booting from DVD drive - karasuhebi - 08-03-2014

I can't get this feature to work. Could the issue be my DVD drive? When I pop in Mario Kart Wii it doesn't even recognize the fact that there's a disc in there. My DVD drive is an ASUS DRW-24B1ST that I bought 4 months ago from Newegg. Here's a link:

Thanks in advance!

That's not how the boot from DVD drive option works. It's used to boot up backup discs, not retail copies of actual Wii disks.

Oh OK. So how do I create a backup disc? Do I just copy all the files over to my computer and mount it with daemonTools or something? I'm not sure I understand.

Just burn the ISO to a new DVD afaik

That's strange. Why would it be able to boot backup discs but not retail copies? What are the differences between the two? The finishing process on the bottom of the disc?

RE: Booting from DVD drive - Shonumi - 08-03-2014

Because retail discs aren't normal DVDs that many consumer drivers can read (not like PS1 or PS2 discs, which almost anyone can read without special tools). Nintendo added things like encryption and BCA marks.

I see, I see. Thanks for the info. So does this mean my drive isn't capable of reading Wii discs then? So I can't dump them from my PC?

Only certain drives could use firmware tricks to read and dump Wii games. There's a thread about it stickied here in Support. You cannot, however, use those drives to directly read Wii discs to play in Dolphin (that would require Dolphin to have code from something like FriiDump).

It's usually easier (and faster) to use Wii Homebrew like CleanRip is all you want to do is dump a disc.
