Completely lost setting up Wii Remote - scubaslim - 01-06-2014
I'm sure this has been covered time and time again, but no matter what I do I cannot get my Nyko Wii Remote to pair with my generic Bluetooth USB Dongle (dongle works with other devices).
I have tried Wiipair, Toshiba Stack, Microsoft stack, editing the Toshiba Stack (all with and without Dolphin open)... Wiipair got me nowhere. Toshiba stack will recognize the remote, but I always get "registration failed". Default bluetooth drivers will recognize it as well, but it instantly disconnects.
I consider myself fairly smart with this kind of stuff, but after spending 5 hours on this scouring forums, watching youtube videos, and failing with tons of trial and error, I'm ready to give up. I would be forever grateful to get a Dummy's step by step guide to help me get this set up.

The problem's almost undoubtedly the "Nyko" part – non-Nintendo remotes rarely work with Dolphin.
Pretty much everything that can connect to a Wii Remote on a PC is designed to work with Nintendo's official remotes, but there's rarely any testing or work done with third-party remotes, and neither the PC apps nor the third-party remotes do the exact same thing as the Wii or its remotes since nobody seems to have fully reverse-engineered everything. The Wii itself seems to be able to deal with much more variety in terms of how remotes connect, as evidenced by the two types of Nintendo remotes (old and -TR) and the various third-party remotes it's able to connect to, but evidently the PC apps only know how to do what the official remotes expect, so they're thoroughly confused by the third-party remotes whose firmware developers took a "do whatever the hell the Wii accepts" attitude to it.

Thanks. That's disappointing, but at least it explains my frustration. Are -TR remotes the ones with the Motion Plus built in? Are the old ones easier to get set up or are they same?

All -TR remotes have built-in MotionPlus, but not all remotes with MotionPlus are -TR remotes – the gold remotes included with Skyward Sword are non-TR MotionPlus remotes. AFAIK, the distinction is that the -TR remotes no longer cover up the red Sync button with the battery cover, instead having it exposed on the back.
-TR remotes take a bit more work to connect to Dolphin, but they work perfectly once you connect them. Yes and no. They have built-in Motion Plus. But the first Wiimotes that included built-in Motion Plus were non-TR models.

Old Wiimotes were easier to set up (both non-TR models with built-in Motion Plus and Wiimotes using the add-on).
TR models need Toshiba stack preferably
